This medication can be used by adults with chronic constipation symptoms that have not improved with the use of laxatives. It promotes bowel motility, alleviating constipation and facilitating bowel movements. Therefore, it is effectively used in the treatment of chronic constipation.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered orally and can be taken at any time during the day, regardless of meals. Adults usually take 2 mg once daily. For elderly patients over 65 years of age, an initial dose of 1 mg once daily is recommended, which may be increased to 2 mg once daily if necessary. In patients with severe renal impairment (GFR < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2) and severe liver impairment (Child-Pugh class C), the dosage is adjusted accordingly.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. Individuals with allergies to the active ingredient or additives of this medication should not use it. This medication is contraindicated in patients with severely impaired renal function who require dialysis. Patients with structural or functional bowel problems or severe inflammatory bowel disease should not use this medication. Furthermore, individuals with genetic disorders that impair lactose breakdown should not take this medication. In patients with severely impaired kidney function, the dose of this medication should be reduced and used cautiously. Patients with serious comorbidities such as liver disease, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, neurological disorders, malignancies, or AIDS should exercise caution when using this medication. Patients with a history of arrhythmias or ischemic heart disease should also be careful when using this medication. It is recommended to lower the dose in patients with severe liver dysfunction. This medication should be used with caution when taken with drugs that can prolong the electrical signals of the heart (QTc interval). During the use of this medication, gastrointestinal symptoms such as headache, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may commonly occur. These symptoms usually appear at the beginning of treatment and often resolve over time. Symptoms such as palpitations or dizziness may rarely occur, so individuals experiencing unusual symptoms should consult a doctor. Severe diarrhea may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so alternative contraceptive methods are recommended. This medication has a low likelihood of drug interactions; however, caution is warranted as blood concentrations may change when taken with specific medications, especially those affecting heart rhythm. Data on the safety of this medication during pregnancy is insufficient, so it is advisable not to use it during pregnancy. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during use. While this medication may be excreted into breast milk, its effects on infants are unknown, hence its use is not recommended during breastfeeding. This medication should not be administered to children or adolescents under 18 years of age. Overdosage may lead to symptoms such as headache, nausea, and diarrhea, requiring appropriate treatment depending on the symptoms. This medication may cause dizziness or fatigue at the beginning of treatment, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery.
