This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy for lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, ApoB protein, and triglycerides in patients with hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia, as well as for increasing HDL cholesterol. It is particularly effective for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and for those with non-familial hypercholesterolemia; it can be used as an adjunctive therapy when other treatments are ineffective in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication should be used in conjunction with appropriate dietary therapy, and when there is an underlying secondary cause, that condition should be treated first. Cholesterol and lipid levels should be periodically checked before and during treatment to confirm therapeutic effect. This comprehensive management improves the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease related to hypercholesterolemia.
