Treatment of psychiatric disorders (depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and bulimia nervosa
This medication is effectively used for depression, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. In patients with depression, relief of symptoms may occur within 5-6 weeks, and it significantly reduces symptoms in cases of bulimia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In premenstrual dysphoric disorder, it helps alleviate emotional instability and physical symptoms. However, it is important to regularly evaluate the efficacy for long-term use in individual patients. By aiding in the treatment of these various symptoms, this medication improves the quality of life of patients.
Adults 1. Depression 1) Initial treatment: The initial dose is 20mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride orally once daily in the morning. In controlled clinical trials, doses of 20~80mg per day were administered. If no improvement is observed, a dose increase may be considered after several weeks. Doses exceeding 20mg per day should be administered in 2 divided doses (morning and noon), and the maximum dose of 80mg per day should not be exceeded. The onset of an adequate antidepressant effect may be delayed until 4 weeks of treatment or longer. 2) Maintenance/continuation/extended treatment: There are no definitive data on how long patients should be treated with this medicine, but psychopharmacologists recognize that acute episodes of depression require drug treatment for several months or longer. It is not known whether the amount of antidepressant needed to relieve symptoms is the same as that needed to maintain or sustain remission. 2. Bulimia nervosa Administer 60mg of this medicine per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. Measure electrolyte levels before starting treatment. 3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder Administer 20~60mg of this medicine per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. 4. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Administer 20mg of this medicine per day. After 6 months of treatment, reassess whether continued treatment is necessary. Patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment, patients taking multiple medications, older adults, and patients with concomitant diseases: Administer a low dose or reduce the frequency of administration. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to age and symptoms. Switching from MAO inhibitors used to treat psychiatric disorders When discontinuing an MAO inhibitor used to treat a psychiatric disorder and starting treatment with this medicine, allow an interval of at least 14 days. Conversely, when starting an MAO inhibitor for the treatment of a psychiatric disorder, at least 5 weeks must have passed since discontinuing this medicine. Other MAO inhibitors, such as linezolid or methylene blue Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start this medicine because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. For patients who require more urgent treatment for a psychiatric condition, including hospitalization, other interventions should be considered. It may be necessary to urgently administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue to a patient already receiving this medicine. If no alternative to linezolid or intravenous methylene blue is available and, for a particular patient, the benefits of treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue are judged to outweigh the risk of serotonin syndrome, this medicine may be discontinued immediately and linezolid or intravenous methylene blue administered. Monitor the patient for symptoms of serotonin syndrome for 5 weeks after administration of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or until 24 hours after the last dose, whichever occurs first. Treatment with this medicine may be restarted 24 hours after the last dose of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. The risk associated with administration of methylene blue by non-intravenous routes (oral tablets or local injection) or intravenous administration of this medicine at a dose of 1mg/kg or less is unclear. Nevertheless, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of emergency symptoms of serotonin syndrome with these uses.
This medication is an antidepressant used for the treatment of depression or psychiatric disorders. Special caution must be exercised when administering this medication to young adults and adolescents aged 18 to 24, as there may be an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors in this age group. This medicine should not be used by patients with hypersensitivity, severe renal impairment, or those taking certain types of medications known as MAO inhibitors. Additionally, it should be avoided in patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Caution is required in patients with a history of seizures, and treatment should be discontinued if seizures occur or become more frequent. Patients with suicidal tendencies also require careful monitoring from the start of treatment, and consultation with a healthcare professional should occur immediately if symptoms worsen or unusual behavior is observed. Caution is also necessary in patients with a history of mania or hypomania. Patients with heart disease or impaired liver or kidney function may require dosage adjustments, and diabetic patients should monitor for changes in blood sugar control. This medication can increase intraocular pressure due to pupil dilation, so caution is advised for patients at risk of glaucoma. Common side effects during treatment may include headache, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, and diarrhea, while rare but serious allergic reactions, bleeding, or liver function abnormalities may occur. In particular, withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, sensory disturbances, and anxiety may appear when stopping the medication, so doses should be reduced gradually. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to consult a doctor if you are taking other medications or consuming alcohol. During pregnancy, it should only be used when absolutely necessary due to potential risks to the fetus, and if breastfeeding, it should be decided after consultation with a doctor. Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents have not been adequately proven, so it is not recommended for use. Caution is also required for elderly patients, and in cases of overdose, appropriate medical treatment should be sought immediately. While taking this medication, care should be taken when driving or operating hazardous machinery, and it should be kept out of reach of children.
