Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive therapy for epilepsy (partial seizures), improvement of fibromyalgia
This medication is used for the treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also utilized as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in people with epilepsy, regardless of the presence of secondary generalized symptoms. Additionally, it is effective in treating fibromyalgia. It provides extensive assistance for these various symptoms, improving the quality of life for patients.
This medication is taken orally in divided doses of 150 mg twice daily, regardless of meals. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose is 150 mg daily; can increase to 300 mg daily within 3 to 7 days, and if necessary, can further increase to a maximum of 600 mg daily at weekly intervals. - Central Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose is 150 mg daily; can increase to 300 mg daily after one week.
Administration is not recommended as there is insufficient safety and efficacy data for children under 12 and adolescents aged 12 to 17.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so if any changes in mood or unusual behaviors occur during treatment, a doctor should be consulted immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to it. Patients with diabetes may have difficulty controlling blood sugar due to weight gain, which may require dosage adjustments of their diabetes medications. If symptoms of angioedema, such as swelling of the face or around the mouth, occur, the medication should be stopped immediately, and medical advice sought. Elderly patients may experience increased dizziness or drowsiness, posing a risk of falls, so caution is required, and symptoms such as loss of consciousness or confusion can manifest. Blurred vision or changes in vision may occur; if these symptoms arise, inform healthcare personnel. Discontinuation of the medication may produce withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, nausea, or anxiety; therefore, do not stop abruptly without consulting a doctor. Due to the potential for drug misuse, patients with a history of substance abuse should be particularly cautious, and monitoring for signs of misuse or dependence is necessary. Patients with reduced kidney function may require dosage adjustments, and there have been reports of medication cessation effects upon improvement of kidney function. Patients with severe cardiac conditions should use this medication with caution. When taken with other medications that have central nervous system depressant effects, particularly opioids, the risk of respiratory depression increases; caution is warranted. In early pregnancy, there is a risk of congenital malformations in the fetus, so it is advisable not to take this medication during pregnancy, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. During breastfeeding, this medication could be passed to infants through breast milk, so consideration should be given to discontinuing breastfeeding or the medication. This medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness, necessitating precautions when driving or operating heavy machinery. Severe skin reactions may rarely occur; if abnormal symptoms such as skin rashes or swelling appear, cessation of the drug should be immediate, and a doctor should be consulted. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, or depression may appear, and blood dialysis may be required if necessary. Children, elderly patients, or those with reduced kidney function require particular caution and dosage adjustments when taking this medication. This medication is mostly excreted through urine, so the possibility of drug interactions with other medications is low; however, if taken with central nervous system depressants, effects may be enhanced.
Hives, severe swelling (edema), angioedema, facial swelling, swelling around the mouth and upper airway, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe rash with fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in oral/ocular mucosa, severe skin reaction, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, cough with fever accompanied respiratory abnormalities, breathing problems, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), extreme lethargy.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air or moisture entry, and kept in a cool place between 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. This storage method will help maintain the drug's effectiveness and prevent deterioration.
