This medication is used to treat various bacterial infectious diseases. It improves respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, empyema, and lung abscesses, and is effective for tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It also helps treat urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis. It is used for pelvic infections and gonorrhea, and is effective for boils, abscesses, soft tissue infections, wound infections, osteomyelitis, and dental infections. Thus, it is widely used for various bacterial infectious diseases, improving the symptoms of infections.
Adults and children aged 12 years or older or weighing above 40 kg should take amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium 250 mg/125 mg orally three times a day at intervals of 8 hours. In cases of severe and respiratory infections, the dosage may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg. In cases of renal impairment, dosing should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. For creatinine clearance above 30 mL/min, no dosage adjustment is needed.
Children aged 12 years or older or weighing above 40 kg should be administered the same dosage as adults. In children, if there is renal impairment, administer with the same reduction method.
This drug is a beta-lactam antibiotic and should not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to penicillin or cephalosporin agents or have experienced serious allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or shock in the past. Additionally, in patients with viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia, there is a high risk of rash, so this medication should be avoided. Patients with liver dysfunction or a history of jaundice should also be cautious when using this medication, as symptoms may recur. Patients with liver dysfunction should be used cautiously as their liver function may worsen, and those with moderate to severe renal impairment may need to adjust dosing intervals because the blood levels of this drug may increase. Patients with allergic backgrounds or family histories, those who have difficulty taking orally, the elderly, and those in poor general condition should be particularly cautious as they may experience vitamin K deficiency symptoms. Gastrointestinal symptoms can include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and indigestion, and in severe cases, pseudomembranous colitis or acute pancreatitis may occur, necessitating immediate discontinuation of the medication and consultation with a doctor if symptoms are severe. Liver function abnormalities may also rarely occur, particularly in elderly males over the age of 60, and symptoms may appear during or after treatment, necessitating regular liver function tests. Skin rashes, itching, and in severe cases, serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis may occur, so any abnormal symptoms should result in immediate discontinuation of the medication. Hematologic abnormalities such as leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia may occur rarely, so attention should be paid to bleeding tendencies or signs of infection. Central nervous system symptoms can include anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, and seizures rarely, especially with an increased risk of seizures in patients with renal impairment. Renal function abnormalities may also rarely occur; hence, regular renal function tests are necessary, and if abnormalities are found, treatment should be ceased. This medication can impact intestinal bacterial balance and may result in fungal infections such as candidiasis, necessitating appropriate action if symptoms arise. There may be a risk of bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency, particularly with long-term use, especially in the elderly, who may exhibit bleeding tendencies. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain antibiotics, so caution is required when used in combination. Use should be avoided during the first three months of pregnancy, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should consider the necessity and risks carefully, as side effects like diarrhea or skin rashes may appear in infants during breastfeeding. It is recommended to use this medication only in children aged 12 and older or weighing over 40 kg, and elderly patients should be treated cautiously with adjusted dosages and intervals due to the higher risk of side effects due to physical decline. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances, drowsiness, and rashes may occur, so immediate medical attention is necessary. This medication can be removed by hemodialysis.
