Adjunctive treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients aged 16 years and older
This medication is used to treat partial seizures in patients with epilepsy aged 16 and over, and it can be effectively used as an adjunctive treatment whether or not there are secondary generalized seizures. Therefore, it helps to reduce the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures.
This medicine should be taken 2 times daily. The recommended initial dose is 50mg per dose, 2 times daily, and should be increased to 100mg per dose, 2 times daily, after 1 week. Depending on clinical response and tolerability, the maintenance dose may be increased by 50mg per dose, 2 times daily, each week. The maximum recommended dose is 400mg daily (200mg per dose, 2 times daily). If treatment with this medicine needs to be discontinued, gradual dose reduction is recommended. (e.g., gradually reducing the daily dose by 200mg each week) This medicine may be taken with or without food. Patients with renal impairment No dose adjustment is required in patients with mild or moderate renal impairment (CLCR>30mL/min). A maximum dose of 300mg daily is recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (CLCR≤30mL/min) and patients with end-stage renal disease. Since this medicine is removed from plasma by hemodialysis, patients on hemodialysis are recommended to receive an additional dose of up to 50% of a single dose immediately after hemodialysis. Treatment of patients with end-stage renal disease should be undertaken with caution because clinical experience is limited and a metabolite (with unknown pharmacological activity) may accumulate. Dose adjustment should be performed cautiously in all patients with renal impairment. Patients with hepatic impairment The dose should be determined cautiously in patients with hepatic impairment. A maximum dose of 300mg daily is recommended for patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment. Use is not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Elderly patients Dose reduction is not necessary in elderly patients. Experience with lacosamide in elderly patients with epilepsy is limited; however, the age-related decrease in renal clearance and increase in AUC should be taken into consideration in elderly patients. (See the section ‘Patients with renal impairment’)
Use is not recommended in children and adolescents under 16 years of age because data on safety and efficacy in these age groups are unavailable.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so if any mood or behavioral changes occur while taking it, you must consult a doctor. Do not take this medication if you have an allergy to any ingredient in it. Dizziness may occur frequently, increasing the risk of falling or injury, so special caution is advised when first taking the medication or adjusting the dose. Patients with heart disease or conduction issues in the heart should have an ECG done before taking this medication and must take it cautiously under a doctor's instructions. This medication may aggravate mental health issues such as depression or suicidal thoughts, so patients and caregivers should report any of these symptoms immediately to healthcare professionals. It is advisable to avoid activities requiring focus, such as driving or operating machinery, until symptoms of dizziness or blurred vision completely resolve. Elderly patients can take this medication without special dose adjustments, but medical judgment may be necessary based on their physical condition. Use in children and adolescents under 16 years of age is not recommended due to insufficient evidence for safety and efficacy in this age group. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking this medication as it may affect the fetus, and caution is advised during breastfeeding since the drug can pass into breast milk. Signs of overdose include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, and as there is no specific antidote, immediate medical attention is necessary.
