Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive treatment for partial seizures in epilepsy, improvement of fibromyalgia.
This medication is used for the treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also utilized as an adjunctive treatment for partial seizures in epilepsy patients, with or without accompanying secondary generalized symptoms. Additionally, it is effective in the treatment of fibromyalgia, helping to alleviate pain and improve quality of life.
This medication should be administered orally without regard to meals, with the total daily dosage divided into two doses. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral and central neuropathic pain: Start with a dose of 150mg daily, which may be increased to 300mg within 3 to 7 days, and if necessary, further increased to a maximum of 600mg every 7 days. 2. Epilepsy - Start with a dose of 150mg daily, which may be increased to 300mg within one week.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, so it is important to carefully monitor for signs of depression, mood changes, or unusual behavior during treatment. This medication should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to it or with specific genetic problems, such as lactose intolerance. For diabetic patients, caution is needed as weight gain could necessitate dosage adjustments for blood glucose control medications. If allergic reactions such as angioedema occur, dosing should be discontinued immediately and a medical consultation is advised. Elderly patients are at risk for symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion, especially during initial doses. Transient visual disturbances or changes in vision have been reported, and medical advice should be sought if these symptoms occur. Abruptly discontinuing this medication may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, and anxiety; therefore, dosage should be tapered gradually under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Due to the risk of drug abuse, extra caution is necessary for patients with a history of substance misuse. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dosage adjustments, and those with cardiovascular diseases should be treated cautiously. Concomitant use with opioid analgesics may increase the risk of central nervous system depression. During early pregnancy, there is a risk of fetal malformation; thus, women of childbearing potential should employ effective contraception and avoid use during pregnancy. Breastfeeding women should consult healthcare providers regarding the discontinuation of either breastfeeding or the medication, as it may be passed to breast milk. Activities requiring alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, should be avoided while experiencing dizziness or drowsiness after taking this medication. Severe skin reactions can rarely occur; if symptoms such as skin rash or redness appear, dosing should be stopped immediately and a healthcare facility should be visited. In cases of overdose, symptoms may include drowsiness, confusion, and depression; emergency interventions like hemodialysis may be necessary if required. Keep out of reach of children and do not transfer to another container for safety.
