Summary

Main use
Treatment and prevention of influenza A and B infections
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
Influenza A and influenza B virus infections: Start treatment on the first or second day after the onset of influenza symptoms. This medicine may be taken with or without food. In some patients, taking it with food may improve tolerability. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: Take 75 mg of oseltamivir orally twice daily for 5 days. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older who have difficulty swallowing capsules should use this medicine as a powder for suspension. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with a creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with a creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg twice daily for 5 days is recommended. For patients with a creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily for 5 days is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after each dialysis session to maintain plasma concentrations within the therapeutic range; treatment should not exceed 5 days. If influenza symptoms develop during the 48 hours between dialysis sessions, the dose may also be given before dialysis begins. For peritoneal dialysis, a single 30mg dose of this medicine after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required for treatment in adults with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9). Prevention of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: For those in close contact with an infected person, take 75 mg of oseltamivir orally once daily for 10 days. Start administration within 2 days of contact with the infected person. The recommended dose for prevention during an influenza outbreak is 75 mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The preventive effect continues while this medicine is being taken. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with a creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with a creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended. For patients with a creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg every other day is recommended. Patients receiving regular hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after every 2 dialysis sessions to maintain plasma concentrations within the therapeutic range. The first dose may be given before dialysis begins. For peritoneal dialysis, administration of 30mg of this medicine once weekly after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required for prevention in adults with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9).

This medication can be used from 2 weeks of age onwards and is used to treat infections caused by influenza A and B viruses. It is important to start administration within 48 hours of the onset of infection. It is also used to prevent influenza infection in children from 1 year old onwards; however, vaccination is the primary method of prevention, and this drug cannot replace the vaccine. It is used as an adjunct if the vaccine's effectiveness is diminished or if vaccination cannot be performed. Therefore, this medication helps in the treatment and prevention of influenza infections.

Precautions

This medication cannot replace the influenza vaccine and should be used separately from vaccination. This medication is effective only against influenza A and B viruses, and safety and efficacy have not been established for other infections. Rarely, neuropsychiatric adverse reactions may occur in children and adolescents, so it is important to closely monitor for unusual behavior. Generally, it is not advisable to use this medication in children over 10 years old except in special cases. Due to the risk of unusual behavior during treatment with this medication, caregivers should ensure that children and adolescents do not stay alone for at least 2 days. Patients with allergies to this drug or its components should not take it. Patients with reduced kidney function may require dosage adjustment, and it is not recommended for patients with end-stage renal disease. High-risk groups, such as those with asthma, chronic bronchitis, or immune suppression, should be administered with caution. Common side effects that may occur during treatment include nausea, vomiting, and headache, most of which are transient. However, severe side effects such as shock, anaphylaxis, hepatitis, skin reactions, acute renal failure, and neuropsychiatric abnormalities may occur rarely, so immediate consultation with healthcare providers is necessary if symptoms develop. Careful consideration of the benefits and risks of treatment is necessary during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children under 1 year of age. While dosage adjustment is not required for the elderly, careful observation is necessary due to potential declining physical function and underlying disease. Although reports of specific adverse reactions due to overdose are rare, any occurrence of unusual symptoms should be promptly reported to healthcare professionals. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container. There are few clinically significant interactions with other medications; however, caution may be needed when used in combination with certain drugs. Taking the medication early when influenza symptoms appear is effective, and if a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible, but if it is within 2 hours of the next scheduled dose, it is better to skip it. The effects on driving or operating machinery are not known, but influenza itself may impair such abilities, so caution is advised.
