Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (including intolerance to ACE inhibitors), reduction of risk of death after myocardial infarction
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension and effectively treats heart failure in patients who cannot use ACE inhibitors. It also helps reduce the risk of death in patients with decreased left ventricular function after myocardial infarction. It is used for improving conditions related to essential hypertension, heart failure, and post-myocardial infarction.
Essential Hypertension: The recommended oral dose is 80 mg of valsartan once a day. If blood pressure is not well controlled, the dose may be increased to 160 mg once a day, up to a maximum of 320 mg. Elderly patients (75 years or older): Start with 40 mg once a day. Patients with renal impairment: For creatinine clearance of 10-20 mL/min, start at 40 mg once a day; do not administer in patients with less than 10 mL/min clearance or in dialysis patients.
Safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, hence it is not recommended.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. It is advisable not to use this medication in patients with severely impaired liver function, liver cirrhosis, or cholestasis. Patients with hereditary angioedema or a history of angioedema while taking ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor antagonists may be at risk if taking this medication. It is safer not to combine this medication with patients who have severe renal impairment, primary hyperaldosteronism, or moderate to severe renal impairment among diabetes patients. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, or patients with mild liver dysfunction should take special care, particularly to avoid dropping blood pressure too low and adjust the dosage slowly. Patients with heart failure or post-myocardial infarction may experience worsening kidney function, so regular kidney function tests should be performed, and careful monitoring is necessary when combined with other antihypertensives. Taking this medication may cause side effects such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, cough, and diarrhea, so if any unusual symptoms occur, it is necessary to consult a doctor. Blood pressure may drop suddenly, leading to dizziness or fainting, so it is recommended to start with a low dose and monitor the condition closely. This medication can increase potassium levels, so when used in conjunction with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements, blood potassium levels should be monitored carefully. Caution is required when taken with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as it can reduce the antihypertensive effect or worsen kidney function. When taken in conjunction with lithium preparations, there may be an increase in blood lithium levels resulting in toxicity, thus regular monitoring of blood levels is necessary. While taking this medication, care should be taken when driving or operating machinery as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. In case of overdose, contact a medical institution immediately for appropriate treatment, and if symptoms of low blood pressure occur, lying down and intravenous fluid treatment may be necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and it is not advisable to transfer it to another container as it may negatively affect quality.
