Treatment of primary nocturnal enuresis (age 5 years and older) and nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults)
This medication is primarily used to treat nocturnal enuresis in children aged 5 years and older and nocturia-related nocturnal urination symptoms in adults. It helps patients whose sleep is disturbed or who experience discomfort in daily life due to nocturia. This medication reduces urine production overnight to promote comfortable sleep and is effective in improving nocturia symptoms. Consistent treatment contributes to enhancing the patient's quality of life.
Treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults only): Administer desmopressin acetate 0.1mg orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient after one week, increase the dose to 0.2mg. If the effect remains insufficient, the dose may be increased at one-week intervals up to 0.4mg. Discontinue treatment if there is no clinical effect within 4 weeks after the dose has been established. Initiation of treatment with this medicine is not recommended in patients aged 65 years and older. In elderly patients requiring treatment, closely monitor serum sodium levels and other parameters. (See section 5. General precautions under Precautions for use.)
Primary nocturnal enuresis (aged 5 years and older): Administer 0.2mg of desmopressin acetate orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 0.4mg. Whether to continue treatment should be decided after 3 months of administration, following a treatment interruption of at least 1 week.
This medication helps regulate bodily fluids. However, elderly patients or those with certain conditions may develop hyponatremia or water intoxication, potentially resulting in coma, so they should be careful to only drink enough water to quench their thirst. People who are allergic to this medication or have specific kidney diseases, heart failure, renal failure, etc., should not take this medication. Additionally, it should only be used for patients with nocturnal enuresis who have normal blood pressure, and individuals with genetic lactose intolerance should avoid taking it. Those with hypertension or cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, pregnant women, or women who may become pregnant, and children and elderly individuals should use this medication cautiously. Special attention is required for those with fluid or electrolyte imbalances. During the use of this medication, fluid intake must be restricted, especially avoiding excessive drinking of water for a certain period before and after administration. Excessive fluid intake can lead to side effects such as headache, nausea, weight gain, and in severe cases, seizures. This medication may interact with other drugs, so the sodium levels in the blood must be regularly monitored when taken with tricyclic antidepressants, diuretics, corticosteroids, etc. Pregnant women should use this medication cautiously due to its uterine contraction effects, and for breastfeeding mothers, it is recommended to stop breastfeeding as the drug can be transmitted through breast milk. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as headache, nausea, seizures, and loss of consciousness may occur. In such cases, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary, and fluid intake should be limited, and appropriate treatment should be received if needed.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air and moisture. It is also recommended to keep the medication at a cool room temperature, between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius.
