Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar control is insufficient with diet and exercise alone. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin, especially in overweight adult patients. It can also be used in children aged 10 and older and adolescents in growth for monotherapy or in combination with insulin, effectively assisting in blood sugar control. This medication helps to manage blood sugar levels in diabetes reliably.
The adult dosage should be determined based on individual drug efficacy and tolerance, and should not exceed the recommended maximum dose of the day. This medication should be started at the minimum effective dose to reduce gastrointestinal adverse reactions and to confirm the necessary minimal dose for proper blood sugar control, typically taken 500 mg two to three times daily with meals. Dosage increases can be made gradually at 500 mg per week.
Can be used in children aged 10 and older and adolescents in growth, with a typical starting dose of 500 mg once daily during or after meals. Blood sugar levels should be measured one week later to adjust the dosage.
This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so any symptoms should be reported to healthcare providers immediately. It should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, serious infections, heart failure, or other acute conditions that may affect renal function. This medication should be discontinued before any examinations using radiocontrast iodine agents, and should not be resumed until renal function is confirmed to be normal after the examination. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or biguanides, as well as in patients with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis. Temporary discontinuation of this medication is recommended before and after surgery or in cases of severe systemic complications or trauma until the patient's condition recovers. Patients with liver dysfunction, pulmonary embolism, severe respiratory disorders, and excessive alcohol consumption should use this medication with caution, and excessive alcohol intake should be avoided. Irregular meals, intense physical exercise, and concomitant medication can increase the risks of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia, so care is needed. This medication may cause gastrointestinal side effects (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.), but they are usually temporary and can be alleviated by taking the medication with meals or gradually increasing the dosage. Lactic acidosis is a rare but very serious side effect, and if symptoms such as fatigue, muscle pain, breathing difficulties, or abdominal pain occur, discontinuation of this medication should occur immediately, and medical attention should be sought. Kidney function should be monitored before starting treatment and on a regular basis, and the medication should be discontinued if renal function declines. Hypoglycemia is rare when this medication is taken alone, but the risk increases when combined with other antidiabetic agents or alcohol, so caution is advised. During pregnancy, limited effects on the fetus have been reported, but use should be avoided in cases of placental insufficiency, pre-eclampsia, or risks of intrauterine growth retardation. In breastfeeding, this medication is excreted in breast milk, so careful consideration is necessary regarding the breastfeeding status and the need for medication treatment. Elderly individuals are more likely to experience reduced kidney function, so regular kidney function tests are necessary, and treatment should be conducted with the minimum effective dosage, avoiding maximum dosages. There may be interactions with other medications, so if taking other drugs, inform healthcare providers, and blood sugar and kidney function should be checked regularly. In case of overdose, hemodialysis can remove the medication from the bloodstream, so immediate emergency treatment should be sought if overdose is suspected. This medication does not cause weight gain and is favorable for weight management, and it helps in blood sugar control and reducing the risk of diabetic complications with long-term use. Keep this medication out of reach of children and avoid transferring it to other containers.
