Efficacy & effects

Improvement of nutritional status through trace element supply

View approved original text

Adequate supply of trace elements such as zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, and chromium during intravenous nutrition is essential for maintaining the balance of essential minerals in the body, supporting metabolism and immune function. These trace elements aid in wound healing and cellular function, promoting recovery in patients. Therefore, this trace element supply is used to prevent nutritional imbalances and improve overall health.

How it is given

Adult administration

Use as prescribed by a physician, adjusting based on plasma trace element levels. Metabolically stable parenteral nutrition patients: Zinc 2.5 to 4 mg per day, Copper 0.5 to 1.5 mg, Manganese 0.15 to 0.8 mg, Chromium 10 to 15 µg, Selenium 20 to 40 µg Metabolically stable patients with small bowel losses: additionally 12.2 mg/L (amount of small bowel loss) or 17.1 mg/kg (stool weight)

Child administration

Pediatric patients under 5 years of age Zinc 100 µg per kg body weight per day, Copper 20 µg, Manganese 2 to 10 µg, Chromium 0.14 to 0.20 µg, Selenium 3 µg

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to premature infants and neonates due to the inclusion of benzyl alcohol, which may cause fatal respiratory issues in these age groups. Injecting without dilution directly into the vein may cause phlebitis; therefore, it must always be diluted before use. This medication is a hypotonic solution, so it should only be used for mixed injections, and it is safer not to administer it alone. If any component shows toxic symptoms during administration, the infusion should be stopped immediately. Parenteral nutrition solutions contain aluminum, which may exhibit toxicity if administered for a long period in patients with impaired kidney function or preterm infants. Physicians should accurately assess the patient's condition and metabolic requirements to adjust doses and should frequently monitor serum levels of trace elements. In patients with renal failure, there is a risk of zinc accumulation, and in patients with biliary obstruction, copper and manganese may accumulate in the body, requiring caution. Diabetes patients should verify the use of diabetes medications since chromium may affect blood sugar control. Selenium dose should be adjusted for patients with renal and gastrointestinal dysfunction, and in blood transfusion patients, the effects of transfusion should be taken into account. The safety of this medication during pregnancy is not established, thus it should only be administered when treatment benefits outweigh risks in pregnant women or women of childbearing potential. Overdosage may cause toxic symptoms of zinc, copper, chromium, selenium, etc., so strict adherence to prescribed dosages is necessary, and if toxicity symptoms are suspected, notify medical personnel immediately. Before administration, confirm the absence of discoloration or foreign substances in the solution and handle under aseptic conditions to minimize infection risk. This medication should be stored in a sealed container to protect from air and moisture. It should be kept in a dry place at room temperature between 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. This helps maintain the drug's efficacy and safety.
