Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia and reduction of the risk of cardiovascular diseases (stroke, myocardial infarction)
This medicine is primarily used as an adjunct to dietary therapy in cases of lipid disorders such as primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, and familial hypercholesterolemia where diet and exercise are insufficient for control. It also lowers LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels, thereby slowing the progression of atherosclerosis. It helps in the treatment of patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and contributes to the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk. In particular, it is used to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular revascularization in high-risk patients with elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels. Through these effects, it overall improves cardiovascular health.
This medication can be administered at any time of the day regardless of meals for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, primary dysbetalipoproteinemia, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. The initial dose is 5 mg once daily, and the maintenance dose is typically 10 mg once daily for most patients. The maintenance dose can be adjusted based on LDL cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response, at intervals of 4 weeks or longer.
This medicine should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to this medication's ingredients, those with severely impaired liver function, patients with muscle diseases, patients with severely impaired kidney function, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and patients who are taking certain medications should not take this medicine. Before taking this medicine, liver function and muscle status should be thoroughly checked. Patients with poor liver function, hypothyroidism, or muscle problems should use this medicine with caution, and regular liver enzyme and muscle-related tests should be performed even during treatment. This medicine can cause side effects such as myalgia, myopathy, and rarely, severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). If symptoms like muscle pain, muscle weakness, or cramping occur, inform a doctor immediately. Furthermore, as this medicine can affect liver function, it should be discontinued immediately if symptoms of jaundice or severe liver damage appear. This medicine may interact with other drugs; therefore, if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform a doctor or pharmacist. Caution is particularly needed when taken with certain antiviral agents, immunosuppressants, antifungals, antibiotics, and fibrate class medications. Women who are pregnant or at risk of becoming pregnant should not take this medication and should use appropriate contraception if planning to conceive. There is no specific antidote for an overdose, so treatment should be symptomatic according to symptoms, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be monitored. Additionally, side effects such as occasional dizziness, headache, dyspepsia, and skin rash may occur during this medication; if symptoms are severe, consult a physician. Finally, this medicine may have higher blood concentrations in Asian individuals; thus, caution is needed when determining the dose.
