This medication is used to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. Additionally, it is utilized as an adjunctive treatment for patients with epilepsy experiencing partial seizures, with or without secondary generalized symptoms. It is also effective in treating fibromyalgia. It aims to improve the quality of life for patients with these three primary conditions and symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered orally in two divided doses per day without regard to food. 1. Neuropathic pain - Peripheral neuropathic pain: An initial dose of 150 mg per day can be administered, which may be increased to 300 mg per day after 3 to 7 days; if necessary, the maximum dose may be increased to 600 mg at 7-day intervals. - Central neuropathic pain: An initial dose of 150 mg per day is recommended, which may be increased to 300 mg per day after one week.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy data are insufficient for children under 12 years and adolescents aged 12-17 years; therefore, administration is not recommended.

Precautions

This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, thus careful monitoring for symptoms of depression or mood changes is advised during use. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or genetic issues like lactose intolerance should not use it. Diabetic patients may need dosage adjustments for blood sugar control due to weight gain, and if symptoms of angioedema occur, treatment should be discontinued immediately. Elderly individuals may experience dizziness, drowsiness, or loss of consciousness, necessitating caution and consultation with a physician if vision changes occur. Abruptly stopping this medication can induce withdrawal symptoms like insomnia, headache, nausea, and anxiety, hence it should be tapered off gradually under a doctor’s direction. Patients with a history of substance abuse may have a higher risk of misuse, thus should use this medication cautiously and monitor for signs of drug misuse or dependence. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dose adjustments. Patients with heart disease or severe congestive heart failure should use this medication with caution. When used in conjunction with opioid analgesics, there is an increased risk of CNS depression, thus caution is warranted. This medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness, thus hazardous activities like driving or operating machinery should be avoided until the effects are known. During early pregnancy, there may be a risk of fetal malformations, hence pregnant women are advised against using this medication, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. Breastfeeding women should consult with a physician regarding whether to discontinue breastfeeding or the medication, as it may pass into breast milk and affect the infant. In case of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, and depression may present, and treatment such as hemodialysis may be necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers. In the event of serious allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, difficulty breathing, or pain in mucous membranes, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical consultation should be sought.
