Treatment of respiratory (bronchitis, pneumonia), urogenital (cystitis, gonorrhea) infections
This medication is used to treat infections caused by various bacteria. It is effective against respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as several respiratory diseases like empyema, lung abscess, tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It is also used for urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis, as well as reproductive infections like pelvic inflammatory disease and gonorrhea. It is helpful in treating skin and soft tissue infections, boils and abscesses, and osteomyelitis. Additionally, it is used to treat dental infections, making it widely applicable for managing infections in various areas. This medication demonstrates therapeutic effects against several strains, making it useful for improving infections.
Adults and children over 12 years or weighing more than 40 kg should take amoxicillin/potassium clavulanate at a dose of 250 mg/125 mg orally three times a day every 8 hours. In cases of severe and respiratory infections, the dose may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg per dose. If there is renal impairment, the dosage should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance.
For children under 12 years old or weighing less than 40 kg, the dosage should be reduced accordingly.
This medication should not be administered to patients allergic to penicillin-related drugs, as it is a beta-lactam antibiotic. In particular, patients who have experienced anaphylaxis or severe skin reactions in the past should not use this medication. Caution is advised when administering to patients with infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia due to increased risk of rashes. Patients with liver function issues may have a recurrence of liver damage upon using this medication, so caution is warranted. Those with compromised liver or kidney function may require dosage adjustments due to increased drug concentrations. Patients with allergic predisposition, elderly patients, or those in poor general condition are at higher risk for side effects like vitamin deficiency or bleeding tendencies. Patients experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea should be careful as it may lead to inadequate drug absorption. If symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, or blood in stool occur during treatment, the medication should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Symptoms of liver dysfunction may manifest during or after discontinuation of the medication, necessitating regular liver function tests. If hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, itching, or difficulty breathing occur, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment should be obtained. Rare abnormalities in blood tests indicating leukopenia, anemia, or thrombocytopenia may occur, thus periodic blood tests are recommended. Central nervous system symptoms like anxiety, confusion, or seizures have been reported rarely, and if such symptoms appear, medical personnel must be notified immediately. It is best to avoid using this medication in early pregnancy and during breastfeeding, and if it must be used, it should be administered cautiously under a doctor's guidance. There may be drug interactions, so patients should inform healthcare providers about any other medications being taken. In case of overdose, symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or seizures may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored in a dry place at temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius, and monitoring for the development of resistant bacteria and side effects is necessary during prolonged use.
