Treatment of respiratory and ear, nose, and throat infections, skin and soft tissue infections, scarlet fever, and urinary tract infections
This medication acts effectively against a variety of causative bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, and Escherichia coli. It is mainly used for skin and soft tissue infections like boils, carbuncles, and contagious impetigo. It is also applicable for treating respiratory infections such as pharyngitis, acute bronchitis, tonsillitis, and pneumonia. It is effective for urinary tract infections like pyelonephritis and cystitis. It helps with inflammation of the ears and sinuses, such as otitis media and sinusitis. Additionally, it is used to treat scarlet fever and improve symptoms.
○ Infants and children: Administer cefpodoxime at 3mg (potency) per kg of body weight per dose, 2~3 times daily, as an oral suspension when used. For severe cases or cases considered to have an inadequate response, administer orally at 4.5mg (potency) per kg of body weight per dose, 3 times daily. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to age, symptoms, etc.
This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which breaks down into phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, it should not be administered to patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria. The daily intake of aspartame should be limited to below the WHO recommended amount, with a maximum dosage of 2.4 g per day for a 60 kg adult. Patients who have previously experienced shock reactions due to this medication should not use it. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be given to patients with genetic conditions such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Patients who have had allergic reactions to cephalosporin antibiotics or any component of this medication should generally avoid its use but may use it cautiously if absolutely necessary. Patients who have had allergic reactions to penicillin antibiotics or who have a tendency to develop allergy symptoms such as bronchial asthma, rashes, or hives should be cautious. Patients with severely impaired kidney function need dose adjustments and observation, as this medication is excreted through the kidneys. Elderly patients and those in poor general condition who find it difficult to take the medication orally, or those receiving non-oral nutrition, need careful monitoring as symptoms of vitamin K deficiency may appear. This medication can rarely cause severe allergic reactions such as shock or anaphylaxis, so treatment should be stopped immediately upon onset of symptoms. If symptoms of hypersensitivity such as rash, hives, itching, or fever occur, treatment should be stopped and appropriate therapy initiated. Severe gastrointestinal disorders such as pseudomembranous colitis can rarely occur, so if abdominal pain or profuse diarrhea worsen, use should be discontinued immediately. If respiratory symptoms such as difficulty breathing, cough, or fever appear, treatment should be stopped, and medical attention is necessary. Blood tests may show leukopenia, platelet abnormalities, etc., so regular monitoring is needed during prolonged use. In patients with reduced kidney function, central nervous system side effects such as seizures or altered perception may occur, making dose adjustments crucial. Serious skin adverse reactions can rarely occur, so skin condition should be carefully monitored, and treatment should be stopped immediately if abnormalities appear. If signs of hepatic dysfunction appear, this should be confirmed through testing, and use should be discontinued if necessary. Renal dysfunction or hematuria may occur, thus regular monitoring of kidney function is required. Symptoms of microbial imbalance like stomatitis or candidiasis may arise, necessitating careful observation. A tendency for bleeding or deficiency symptoms of vitamin B complex due to vitamin K deficiency may appear, so caution is required. Long-term use of this medication may rarely result in symptoms like headache, edema, sensory disturbances, and malaise. To prevent resistant bacteria, it's advisable to conduct sensitivity testing and administer the minimum duration needed. To prevent shock reactions, comprehensive patient interviews and skin tests are recommended. Dizziness may occur when taking this medication, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. When taken for more than 10 days, it is safe to perform blood tests to check leukocyte counts. In patients with reduced kidney function, not adjusting the dose adequately can lead to seizures, hence caution is necessary. Reports of serious skin reactions have been documented, so if skin abnormalities occur, immediate consultation with a physician is needed. Concurrent use of this medication with diuretics or aminoglycoside antibiotics may increase the risk of kidney dysfunction, so it should be administered cautiously. Coadministration with probenecid can delay the excretion of this medication, leading to increased blood concentrations, indicating a need for caution. Medications like antacids or H2 blockers may reduce the absorption of this medication, so caution is required if taken together. Safety during pregnancy has not been established, thus it should be administered cautiously to pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, and it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding if nursing. It is desirable not to use it in newborns, premature infants, and infants under 2 months of age as safety has not been confirmed. Elderly patients may have a higher risk of reduced physiological function and adverse reactions, so dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted while monitoring conditions. This medication may affect the results of certain clinical tests, so patients should inform their doctor at the time of testing. If reconstituted as a suspension, it should be stored in the refrigerator, used within 2 weeks, and well shaken before administration.
