Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (intolerance to ACE inhibitors), reduction of mortality risk after myocardial infarction
This medicine is used for the treatment of essential hypertension and is effective for heart failure patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors (NYHA class II to IV). Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of death in patients with stable myocardial infarction accompanying left ventricular failure or systolic dysfunction. It is used for improving various cardiovascular diseases.
1. Essential Hypertension - The recommended dose is 80 mg orally once daily as valsartan. - If blood pressure is not well controlled, the dose may be increased to 160 mg once daily or combined with a diuretic, with a maximum dose of 320 mg once daily. - For the elderly (aged 75 years and older), treatment should start at 40 mg once daily. - In patients with renal impairment, dosing should start at 40 mg based on creatinine clearance or not administered.
Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established. Therefore, it is not administered.
This medicine can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Therefore, if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be stopped immediately. This medicine should not be used in women who are pregnant, possibly pregnant, or breastfeeding. It is safer not to administer this medicine to patients with severe liver impairment, cirrhosis, or biliary obstruction. Patients with a history of angioedema or who have experienced angioedema while taking ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor antagonists should not use this medicine. This medicine is not administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function, hyperaldosteronism, or diabetic patients with certain kidney disorders. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia, and patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction should be administered the medicine with caution, as dosage adjustments may be necessary. Patients with cardiovascular disease or dehydration, and pre-operative patients should be closely monitored when administering this medicine. This medicine can suddenly lower blood pressure; thus, special caution is needed when taking it for the first time. If symptoms of hypotension occur, consult a doctor immediately. Interactions may occur when taken with other antihypertensives or diuretics, so it should be taken according to a doctor's instructions. When combined with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements, there is a risk of increased serum potassium levels, thus regular blood tests are necessary. Regular checks of liver function, kidney function, electrolyte levels, etc. should be performed to ensure there are no abnormalities during the course of taking this medicine. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur; therefore, caution is needed when driving or handling machinery. Safety has not been established in children and adolescents, so use is not recommended. In case of overdose, severe hypotension or decreased consciousness may occur, and immediate emergency care is required. This medicine should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
