This medication is used to improve symptoms caused by atherosclerosis in adults with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease. Additionally, it helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications and alleviate symptoms in patients with acute coronary syndrome who have received drug therapy, coronary intervention, or coronary artery bypass surgery for unstable angina or non-Q wave myocardial infarction. Furthermore, it improves health by reducing the risk of thromboembolism, including stroke, in patients with atrial fibrillation who have one or more vascular risk factors, cannot use vitamin K antagonists, and have a low risk of bleeding. In summary, this medication is effectively used to prevent and treat vascular complications.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

1. For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease, Clopidogrel is administered orally at a dose of 75 mg once daily. 2. For patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or non-Q wave myocardial infarction), a loading dose of 300 mg is administered orally once on the first day of treatment, followed by a maintenance dose of 75 mg orally once daily. Precautions

This medication prevents platelets in the blood from clumping together, allowing blood to flow more easily. The medication needs to be converted into its active form in the liver to be effective; those with genetic deficiencies in the enzymes that activate this medication may experience reduced effectiveness. Since there is a risk of bleeding while taking this medication, it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. You should be aware that if bleeding occurs or worsens at the site, you must inform your doctor immediately. Patients at high risk of bleeding or those who are already experiencing bleeding should be cautious when taking this medication. Especially those with bleeding disorders such as gastrointestinal, intracranial bleeding, severely impaired liver function, breastfeeding women, or those with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. If bleeding or blood abnormalities are suspected, prompt testing is necessary, and you should be cautious of increased bleeding risks when taking this medication alongside other antiplatelet or anticoagulant agents. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 5 to 7 days prior and resume only after hemostasis is achieved. Taking this medication with aspirin may increase the risk of bleeding, so you should follow your doctor’s instructions if combining them. This medication can rarely cause severe thrombocytopenia or blood disorders; thus, if fever or signs of infection occur, you should consult with healthcare professionals. Some patients may experience skin rashes or allergic reactions, so report any unusual symptoms. While the risk to the fetus during pregnancy is not significant, the risk of bleeding during delivery may increase, so you should stop taking it before childbirth. For breastfeeding individuals, since this medication may pass into breast milk, you should consult with your doctor about whether to continue or discontinue breastfeeding. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney and liver function are at increased risk of bleeding, necessitating dosage adjustments and monitoring. Overdosing on this medication may significantly increase the risk of bleeding, and because there is no specific antidote, platelet transfusion may be needed if bleeding occurs. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, therefore its use is not recommended. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are taking. Particularly, caution is needed when taking it with drugs that may increase bleeding risk or interfere with its metabolism in the liver.
