This drug is used to treat infections caused by various bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae. It is mainly used for complex skin and soft tissue infections, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and acute sinusitis. It is also effective for the treatment of urinary tract infections, including chronic bacterial prostatitis and pyelonephritis. However, since fluoroquinolone antibiotics are associated with serious adverse reactions, they should only be used when no other treatments are available for acute bacterial sinusitis, exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and complex skin and soft tissue infections. Taking these points into consideration aids in administering appropriate treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically, 250-750 mg of levofloxacin is administered orally once a day for adults. For patients with normal renal function (creatinine clearance over 80 mL/min): - Complex skin and soft tissue infections: 750 mg every 24 hours for 10-14 days - Community-acquired pneumonia: 500 mg every 24 hours for 7 days - Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 7 days - Acute sinusitis: 10-14 days - Chronic bacterial prostatitis.

Precautions

This drug is used to treat various bacterial infections as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This medication can cause serious side effects such as tendinitis, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system disorders, and exacerbation of myasthenia gravis. If such symptoms occur, the drug should be discontinued immediately, and it is safe not to use other drugs in the same class. This medication is not given to patients with myasthenia gravis, as it can worsen symptoms. The drug should only be used when no other treatment is available for specific infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media. In particular, in elderly patients, those with impaired kidney function, patients receiving high doses, or those using it in combination with corticosteroids, the risk of tendon rupture increases; therefore, combination should be avoided. If pain or inflammation in the shoulder, hand, or Achilles tendon occurs during drug use, the treatment should be discontinued and rest should be taken. This medication has neuromuscular blocking effects that may exacerbate symptoms in patients with myasthenia gravis, so caution is needed. This drug should not be administered to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to it or similar medications, children and adolescents under 18 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or patients with epilepsy. Care must be taken when administering to patients with severe renal impairment, central nervous system diseases, a history of seizures, those taking certain anti-inflammatory drugs or theophylline, the elderly, diabetic patients, those with specific genetic deficiencies, or those with cardiovascular diseases. This medication may rarely cause shock, severe hypersensitivity reactions, neuropsychiatric disorders (insomnia, dizziness, anxiety, hallucinations, seizures, etc.), cardiac arrhythmias, renal and liver dysfunctions, hematological abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, skin disorders, and respiratory disorders. Particularly serious skin reactions or abnormalities of the aorta or heart valves may occur, so if abnormal symptoms arise, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is required. When using this medication, it is important to administer it for the minimum necessary duration after susceptibility testing to prevent the occurrence of resistant bacteria. This drug can increase the risk of seizures, so patients with epilepsy or central nervous system diseases should be particularly cautious and should avoid excessive sunlight or ultraviolet exposure. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. This drug can interact with certain medications, so patients should inform healthcare professionals if they are using antacids, iron supplements, calcium supplements, warfarin, theophylline, etc. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this drug, and it should not be administered to growing children or adolescents. Elderly patients may experience increased drug concentrations due to impaired kidney function, so dose adjustments and caution are necessary. In case of an overdose, central nervous system symptoms and cardiac abnormalities may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This drug can affect joints and cartilage; therefore, it should be used cautiously in long-term use or in growing patients.
