Treatment of recurrent (acute otitis media, acute sinusitis)
This medication is effective against infectious agents such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. It is particularly used for treating recurrent or persistent acute otitis media and recurrent acute sinusitis in pediatric patients. However, the treatment targets are limited to children who have had antibiotic treatment within the last 3 months, are under 2 years old, or attend daycare. This medication effectively improves infections in pediatric patients that satisfy these conditions.
For pediatric patients over 3 months, the dosage is based on the amoxicillin content (600 mg/5 mL) of 90 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours. For acute otitis media, it is administered for 10 days, and for acute sinusitis, for 7 days.
This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which breaks down into phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should not take this medication. Additionally, patients allergic to the ingredients of this medication or beta-lactam antibiotics should not be administered. Patients with viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphoblastic leukemia should also be cautious as they have an increased risk of rash when taking this medication. Patients with liver issues or liver function problems, as well as those with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders, should not use this medication. Patients with liver damage or impaired kidney function should use this medication cautiously and may need to adjust the dosing interval. This medication generally has few side effects, but symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, skin rashes, and contact dermatitis may occur. Rarely, liver dysfunction, allergic reactions, blood abnormalities, and kidney issues may arise, so if any unusual symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. When using antibiotics, it is important to take them for only the necessary period to prevent the occurrence of resistant bacteria, and they should not be used for viral infections such as colds. Pregnant women in early pregnancy or breastfeeding should be cautious when using this medication, especially avoiding it in the first 3 months of pregnancy. It is not recommended for infants under 3 months as safety has not been established. Furthermore, this medication may interact with other drugs, so if currently taking other medications, it is vital to inform a doctor or pharmacist. For example, caution is needed when used with anticoagulants or certain antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Overdose may cause gastrointestinal symptoms, kidney problems, central nervous system abnormalities, etc., so it is essential to adhere to the prescribed dosage, and if unusual symptoms appear, contact healthcare professionals immediately. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, kept in a tightly closed container, refrigerated after preparation, and used within 7 days. Shake well before use.
