This medication is primarily used as an adjunct in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia, and mixed hyperlipidemia when diet and exercise are not enough to control these conditions. It also plays a role in lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, thereby delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It may be administered as an adjunct to diet for pediatric patients between the ages of 10 and 17 who exceed specific cholesterol criteria. It is beneficial for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and is used to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and risks associated with arterial revascularization in middle-aged and older men and women with a high risk of cardiovascular disease. This medication is effective in decreasing dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease risk.
