Treatment of respiratory and skin infections, mycobacterial infections, and Helicobacter pylori eradication
This medication is effective in treating various bacterial infections. It is used for lower respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as upper respiratory infections such as pharyngitis and sinusitis. It is also effective against skin and soft tissue infections. Particularly, it is used for infections caused by Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium intracellulare. Furthermore, this drug is prescribed for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with duodenal ulcers. Overall, it is used to improve a range of bacterial infections.
Adults: The usual dose is 250mg (potency) of clarithromycin per dose, twice daily; for severe infections, administer 500mg (potency) per dose, twice daily. The usual duration of treatment is 7~14 days. For patients with renal failure whose creatinine clearance is 30mL/min or less, the dose should be reduced by half: administer 250mg (potency) once daily, or, for severe infections, 250mg (potency) per dose twice daily. Do not administer to these patients for more than 14 days. Mycobacterial infections: Administer 500mg (potency) of this medicine per dose, twice daily. In this case, it should be administered in combination with other antimycobacterial agents such as ethambutol, clofazimine, and rifampin. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with duodenal ulcers: Administer 500mg (potency) of this medicine 3 times daily in combination with omeprazole 40mg once daily for 14 days, followed by omeprazole 40mg once daily for 14 consecutive days. That is, administer clarithromycin 500mg (potency) per dose 3 times daily for 14 days (days 1~14), and omeprazole 40mg once daily for 28 days (days 1~28).
Children aged 12 years and older: Same as adults For children under 12 years, use clarithromycin dry syrup.
This drug should not be used in patients with an allergy to specific components. Patients who have previously shown hypersensitivity to antibiotics in the same class should also avoid administration. Patients taking certain heart-related medications with this drug may have an increased risk of heart rhythm abnormalities, thus they should not use this drug. Patients with a history of arrhythmia or heart disease should use this drug cautiously, and those with severely impaired liver or kidney function should also avoid or use it carefully. It is advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid taking this drug. This drug may have various side effects, so if abnormal symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, severe dyspepsia, or auditory disturbances occur, medical consultation should be sought immediately. Although rare, severe skin reactions or liver dysfunction can occur, so treatment should be stopped and medical care sought immediately if symptoms arise. This drug may interact with other medications, hence informing healthcare professionals about any medications being taken is essential. Patients with impaired kidney or liver function may require dose adjustments, so they should follow healthcare provider instructions. Long-term or high-dose use may cause hearing impairment or tinnitus, so treatment should be discontinued if these symptoms occur. If diarrhea or abdominal pain persists during treatment, it may indicate a serious bowel condition like pseudomembranous colitis, thus immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Older patients should use this drug with caution due to the potential for increased drug concentrations caused by reduced physical function.
