Efficacy & effects

Treatment of type 2 diabetes through blood sugar control and weight improvement

  • Type 2 diabetes with insufficient blood sugar control
View approved original text

This medication is used to effectively manage blood sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes who have difficulty controlling their blood sugar with diet and exercise alone, particularly those who are overweight. It helps in blood sugar control and contributes to the prevention of complications when used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. It is a safe and effective treatment method that can be adjusted according to the patient's condition.

How to take

Adult dose

The initial dosage is 500 mg of Metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablet taken once daily with the evening meal. After one week, measure the blood sugar levels to adjust the dosage, which can be increased by 500 mg weekly up to a maximum of 2000 mg per day, also taken with the evening meal. If blood sugar control is not achieved after using a maximum of 2000 mg once daily, consider administering 1000 mg twice daily with meals. Renal impairment.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a serious metabolic complication called lactic acidosis, which has been reported to lead to death. Caution is necessary if used with other diabetes medications, as severe hypoglycemia may occur. It should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infections, acute myocardial infarction, or other acute conditions that can affect renal function. Patients with acute or unstable heart failure should also avoid using this medication. Administration should be discontinued before and after the use of iodine contrast agents, and reinstituted only after confirming normal renal function. It should not be given to patients who have had an allergic reaction to any component of this medication, patients with type 1 diabetes, or patients experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis. During severe infections, major trauma, or surgical procedures, it is advisable to temporarily discontinue this medication and restart it once the patient's condition has stabilized. Patients with poor nutritional status, liver dysfunction, respiratory failure, or excessive alcohol intake also require caution when using this medication. This medication is primarily excreted by the kidneys, so renal function should be monitored regularly, and administration should be stopped immediately if there is a sudden decline in renal function. Additionally, the use of this medication may result in vitamin B12 deficiency, so serum vitamin B12 levels should be checked regularly. Gastrointestinal adverse effects are common during the initial treatment but usually improve over time. Excessive acute or chronic alcohol intake should be avoided during the use of this medication, and caution is required when used in combination with other medications that pose a risk of hypoglycemia. During pregnancy, this medication may affect fetal growth, so pregnant women should consult a doctor before taking it and exercise caution while breastfeeding. Elderly patients commonly experience reduced renal function, so dose adjustment and regular monitoring of renal function are necessary. In cases of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis rather than hypoglycemia, and treatment should be sought immediately from a medical institution, where blood dialysis may be beneficial. This medication should not be chewed or crushed but swallowed whole, and it is normal for the tablet coating to be expelled in the stool. Finally, it is important to conduct regular blood sugar and renal function tests during the use of this medication to continuously monitor treatment effectiveness and safety.
