Treatment for hypercholesterolemia (primary, familial) and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used primarily for patients with hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia that are not controlled by diet and exercise. It is particularly helpful in the treatment of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Additionally, it effectively lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. It can also be used as an adjunct to diet in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 with specific conditions. This medication contributes to improving cardiovascular health by decreasing the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular revascularization. Overall, it is used to improve blood lipid levels and prevent cardiovascular disease.
For patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, dysbetalipoproteinemia, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, maintain a standard cholesterol-lowering diet and administer once daily at any time of the day, irrespective of meals. The initial dose is 5 mg once daily, with adjustments to the maintenance dose of 10 mg once daily as needed. Dosing adjustments should occur at intervals of at least 4 weeks, with a maximum daily dose of 20 mg.
Pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (aged 10 to 17 years) are administered a dosage range of 5 mg to 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted individually based on treatment goals requiring a period of at least 4 weeks.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients with allergies to this medication, severely impaired liver function, muscle diseases, those taking certain medications, patients with severely impaired kidney function, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and patients at high risk for muscle diseases should not take this medication. Before taking this medication, underlying conditions such as liver disease or hypothyroidism should be treated, and caution is required for patients who consume alcohol excessively or have weak liver function. Additionally, if symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, or cramps occur, the physician should be notified immediately, and blood tests may need to be conducted to check for muscle damage. This medication contains lactose and should not be taken by patients with lactose intolerance. Routine monitoring of liver and kidney function is required during treatment, particularly taking precautions against the potential deterioration of kidney function in patients on high doses. This medication may interact with various other drugs, so it is essential to inform the physician or pharmacist about any other medications being taken. Especially when combined with drugs that increase the risk of muscle toxicity, dosage adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must use adequate contraception, and if pregnancy is confirmed, they should discontinue use immediately. It is also recommended that breastfeeding women not take this medication. There is no specific antidote in the case of overdose, so treatment is based on symptoms, and monitoring of liver function and muscle damage is required. This medication does not significantly affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, but caution is advised due to the possibility of dizziness. Lastly, this medication may rarely cause severe skin reactions, liver damage, or muscle damage in some patients, so any abnormal symptoms should be reported to medical personnel immediately.
