Prevention and treatment of bronchial asthma (asthma symptoms) and allergic conditions (rhinitis, skin diseases).
This medication is used to prevent asthma symptoms related to bronchial asthma and allergic bronchitis. It also helps prevent and treat allergic rhinitis and various allergic skin diseases, such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, and skin itching. It is effective for multiple systemic allergic conditions. Thus, this drug is used to improve and prevent various symptoms caused by allergies.
For adults and children over 3 years old: Administer 1 mg of ketotifen orally, twice daily (during breakfast and dinner). For those over 10 years, it may be administered up to 2 mg if necessary. If sensitivity such as sedation occurs when taking ketotifen, start with 0.5 mg twice daily or 1 mg at bedtime for the first week of treatment and then gradually increase to 2 mg per day.
For children aged 6 months to under 3 years: Administer 0.5 mg orally, twice daily (during breakfast and dinner). Adjust the dosage appropriately according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be used in patients who have an allergic reaction to this drug or its components or have a history of such reactions. Patients with epilepsy or a history of seizure disorders should be cautious, as seizures may occur during the use of this medication. This medication cannot substitute for steroid medications used in the treatment of asthma, so it should not be used solely as an asthma treatment. Breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication, and if unavoidable, should discontinue breastfeeding. Patients taking oral hypoglycemic agents should have their blood tested to monitor conditions, as the platelet count may decrease when using this medication together. Patients with genetic issues such as fructose intolerance are advised not to take the syrup form of this medication. If asthma patients are already on other treatments, they should not suddenly discontinue existing medications when switching to this drug; reductions should be made gradually. Symptoms such as drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness may occur during the use of this medication but usually subside naturally over time. In particular, in children, central nervous system symptoms such as excitability, insomnia, and nervous hyperactivity may manifest, requiring careful observation. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery during the first few days after taking this medication, as reaction times may slow down. Patients receiving long-term steroid treatment should carefully reduce their steroid dosage when taking this medication to prevent adrenal function decline. If there is an infection, appropriate antibacterial treatment should be administered simultaneously. This medication does not suppress already occurring seizures or symptoms, so patients should be informed of this point sufficiently. Patients with seasonal allergies should start taking this medication before symptoms begin and continue until symptoms resolve. When stopping this medication, it should be gradually reduced over 2 to 4 weeks to minimize side effects. Caution should be exercised when using this medication with sedatives, sleeping pills, antihistamines, or alcohol, as their combined effects may enhance each other, and dosages should be adjusted accordingly. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the benefits and risks before taking this medication. This medication can be used in children or the elderly; however, great caution should be taken in children due to potential central nervous system symptoms and in the elderly, taking into consideration functional decline. In case of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness, confusion, headache, and irregular heartbeat may appear, and appropriate medical treatment should be sought immediately. It is recommended to stop taking this medication 3 to 5 days before conducting allergy tests.
