Treatment of infections in the respiratory system (pneumonia, bronchitis) and reproductive system (gonorrhea)
This drug is effective for infections in the respiratory system such as pneumonia and bronchitis, as well as infections in otolaryngology, kidney and urinary tract infections, and reproductive system infections such as gonorrhea. It is also used to prevent sepsis and infections before and after surgery, and is useful in treating infections of bones and joints, as well as skin, wound, and soft tissue infections. It helps treat various gastrointestinal infections such as peritonitis, cholecystitis, and cholangitis, as well as infections in patients with weakened immune function. This drug can also be used for treating meningitis, making it a widely utilized medication for various bacterial infections caused by different strains. Therefore, this drug is used for the treatment of various infections caused by several types of bacteria.
For adults and children over 12 years, administer 1–2 g (potency) of ceftriaxone once daily by intravenous or intramuscular injection. For infections caused by severe or moderately susceptible pathogens, the dose can be increased to 4 g (potency) once daily. In elderly patients, the adult dosing regimens should be followed without modification. For treatment of gonorrhea caused by penicillin-susceptible and resistant strains, a single intramuscular dose of 250 mg (potency) is recommended.
For neonates (within 14 days of birth), administer 20–50 mg/kg (potency) once daily, not exceeding 50 mg. For infants and children (15 days to 12 years), administer 20–80 mg/kg (potency) once daily.
This drug should not be mixed or administered simultaneously with solutions or drugs containing calcium. This is especially true for neonates, as the combination of this drug and calcium poses a risk of precipitate formation and should not be given. Patients with allergies to this drug or a history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillin antibiotics should not use it. Furthermore, premature infants, those with jaundice, or neonates with issues relating to bilirubin binding may also be at risk if this drug is used. Patients with a history of allergies or significantly impaired renal function should exercise caution when administered this drug, and elderly or compromised patients may experience vitamin K deficiency, so regular blood tests should be conducted to monitor this. This drug may cause side effects such as eosinophilia, leukopenia, diarrhea, rash, and increased liver enzymes, while rare severe reactions include serious allergic responses, kidney damage, hepatitis, and skin reactions. If any abnormal symptoms appear, the use of this drug should be immediately discontinued, and healthcare personnel should be consulted. When administering this drug, it is important to perform susceptibility testing to prevent the emergence of resistant strains and to administer for the necessary duration only. Additionally, the patient's condition should be carefully monitored after administration, with regular kidney and liver function tests conducted. The safety of this drug during pregnancy has not been fully established; therefore, it should only be used cautiously when absolutely necessary. Caution should also be taken with nursing mothers. The safety of this drug has not been established for neonates and premature infants, and it should particularly not be administered to neonates at risk for bilirubin encephalopathy. In the elderly, side effects may occur more readily due to decreased physiological function, so dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted with caution. This drug may interact with other medications; thus, especially when used in combination with diuretics or aminoglycoside antibiotics, renal function should be closely monitored. Additionally, it must be administered separately from calcium-containing solutions, and the infusion line should be thoroughly cleaned post-administration. Symptoms such as dizziness may occur during administration, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery, and in cases of overdose, specific antidotes are unavailable, and treatment should be symptomatic. This drug should be used as soon as possible after preparation and should ideally be used within 6 hours at room temperature and 24 hours under refrigeration.
