Treatment for hypercholesterolemia and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used as an adjunct in cases of hyperlipidemia, such as primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, when not adequately controlled by diet and exercise. It is particularly helpful for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, lowering total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels to delay the progression of atherosclerosis. Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy in pediatric patients who meet certain criteria. It is also effective in patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia. Patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease with elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels may reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and revascularization procedures with this medication. In summary, this drug is effectively used to reduce the risk of various types of dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases.
It can be administered at any time of the day regardless of meals. The initial dosage is 5 mg once daily, and the maintenance dosage is 10 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more, with a maximum increase to 20 mg per day if necessary.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the dosage is administered once daily between 5 mg and 20 mg. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more, and for those under 10 years of age.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients with allergies to any component of this drug, severe liver problems, muscle diseases, and patients with severely impaired kidney function should not receive this medication. Pregnant or nursing women, as well as women of childbearing potential who are not using adequate contraception, should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age should only take it after fully understanding the risks of pregnancy and potential harm to the fetus. This medication should be administered cautiously to patients with a history of excessive alcohol consumption or liver disease, and liver function tests may be needed during treatment. Additionally, if symptoms of muscle pain or weakness occur, immediate notification to a healthcare professional is required for necessary examinations. Patients at high risk for muscle-related side effects (e.g., reduced kidney function, hypothyroidism, history of genetic muscular diseases, elderly patients, etc.) need to be monitored more closely before and after taking this medication. This drug may interact with certain medications, and if taking other medications, consult your healthcare provider, as caution is needed with concomitant administration. Special attention should be paid when taken with some antiviral agents, immunosuppressants, antifungals, certain antibiotics, and fibrates due to an increased risk of muscular side effects. This medication should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and women who may become pregnant must use appropriate contraceptive methods. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so immediate medical attention is required for treatment based on symptoms, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels need to be tested. This drug may cause dizziness or headaches, so caution is advised while driving or operating machinery. Lastly, if severe rash or allergic reactions appear during the use of this medication, it should be stopped immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
