This medication is used as an adjunct in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia when diet and exercise are insufficient. It also helps patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to diet or other lipid-lowering therapies. It effectively lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It is also used as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Furthermore, it is used to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization in high-risk patients with cardiovascular disease risk factors above a certain threshold. Therefore, this medication is effective in improving lipid levels and reducing cardiovascular disease risk.

The initial dose is 5 milligrams once daily, and if a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol is needed, it can be adjusted to a maintenance dose. Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. It should not be administered to patients with an allergy to this medication, unexplained liver dysfunction, muscular disorders, those taking cyclosporine, patients with severe renal dysfunction, pregnant or nursing women, and fertile women who are not using appropriate contraception. Additionally, high doses are prohibited in patients at high risk for muscular disorders, and those with certain genetic problems such as lactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. This medication should be used with caution in patients who consume a lot of alcohol or have a history of liver disease, and liver function tests should be repeated before and during treatment. If symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, the patient should immediately consult a physician, and patients at high risk for muscle damage should have their muscle enzyme levels checked regularly. This medication should be discontinued if severe health conditions or acute renal function deterioration is anticipated. This medication can rarely cause severe muscle weakness or ophthalmoplegia; if these symptoms occur, the medication should be stopped. Combining this medication with certain specific drugs may increase the risk of muscle damage; therefore, it is advisable to consult a physician before combining medications, and it is recommended not to combine with some drugs. High doses may cause temporary proteinuria, necessitating renal function tests. In Asians, drug concentrations may increase, so dosage adjustments may be necessary. In pediatric and adolescent patients, usage is recommended only for a limited period, and monitoring of growth and maturation is required. During the use of this medication, rare adverse effects may occur, such as liver damage, skin reactions, neurological abnormalities, gastrointestinal disturbances, and muscle-related adverse reactions, so any symptoms should be immediately reported to medical staff. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant must ensure appropriate contraception, and the use of this medication should be immediately stopped if pregnancy occurs. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so symptomatic treatment and liver and muscle function tests are needed. This medication is known to have little effect on driving or operating machinery, but caution is advised as dizziness may occur. The effects and side effects of this medication can vary from individual to individual; therefore, if there are any suspected symptoms or unusual reactions during use, consultation with a professional is essential.
