This drug is used in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia when dietary control and exercise do not suffice. It is also used as an adjunct to dietary changes and other lipid-lowering therapies in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. In patients with hypercholesterolemia, it lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. For pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, it is used as a dietary adjunct to control cholesterol levels under strict guidelines. Additionally, it is effective as a dietary adjunct for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. It also helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular re-intervention in men over 50 years and women over 60 years with risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In summary, this medication is used for various dyslipidemias including hypercholesterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia and for reducing cardiovascular disease risk.

Precautions

This drug should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it should not be used in patients with an allergy to the components of this drug, severely impaired liver function, muscle disease, severely reduced kidney function, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and in cases where it is taken with certain medications. It is important to regularly check liver function and muscle condition while using this drug. Patients who consume large amounts of alcohol, have a history of liver disease, hypothyroidism, decreased kidney function, and elderly patients should be especially cautious. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, or cramps occur, notify healthcare personnel immediately, and it may be necessary to discontinue the medication. It is advisable to avoid conducting muscle-related tests immediately after intense exercise. This drug can affect liver function; therefore, treatment should be stopped immediately if jaundice or symptoms of liver damage appear. Blood sugar levels should also be monitored regularly, as the risk of diabetes may increase. The effectiveness and side effects of this drug may vary according to certain genetic factors, necessitating dosage adjustments based on the patient's condition. Severe skin reactions can occur rarely, so if severe rashes, redness, or swelling occur on the skin, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical advice sought. Concomitant use with other drugs may lead to interactions, so it is essential to inform healthcare personnel about all medications being taken. Notably, using this drug with specific antivirals, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, and fibrate medications may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant must use adequate contraceptive methods, and should discontinue use immediately if pregnancy occurs. Use while breastfeeding is also not recommended. In cases of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, so treatment should be symptomatic while managing liver and muscle examinations. Dizziness may occur while taking this drug, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
