Treatment of respiratory and urogenital infections
This medication is used to treat various infections caused by a range of bacteria. It is effective for respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, empyema, and lung abscesses, and is also used for tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. Additionally, it is helpful for urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, as well as for pelvic infections and gonorrhea. It is suitable for treating skin and soft tissue infections, boils, abscesses, and wound infections, and it improves osteomyelitis and dental infections. This medication is effective against a wide range of bacteria, making it suitable for extensive infections.
Adults and children over 12 years or weighing 40 kg or more should be given amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium at a dose of 250 mg/125 mg orally three times a day every 8 hours. In cases of severe and respiratory infections, the dose can be increased to 500 mg/125 mg per dose. In cases of kidney impairment, the dosage should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance. For creatinine clearance of 10-30 mL/min, one dose of 250 mg/125 mg is given every 12 hours.
For children under 12 years or weighing less than 40 kg, the dosage should be reduced according to the above methods.
This medication is a beta-lactam antibiotic and should not be used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to penicillin or cephalosporin drugs. Particularly, patients who have viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia should be cautious due to a higher risk of rash. It can also be risky for patients with a history of liver dysfunction or jaundice. Patients with liver impairment should use it cautiously because liver function may worsen, and patients with moderate to severe kidney dysfunction may need to adjust the dosing intervals due to increased drug concentrations. Patients with allergies or symptoms of bronchial asthma or hives should also exercise caution. Additionally, patients with gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea may not absorb the medication adequately. This medication can cause various side effects on the gastrointestinal tract, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, and in severe cases, it can cause serious conditions like pseudomembranous colitis. Symptoms of liver dysfunction have also been reported; particularly in elderly patients aged 60 and over or males, liver enzymes may rise, and hepatitis or jaundice may occur, necessitating regular liver function tests. Rarely, severe skin reactions or hypersensitivity reactions like anaphylactic shock may occur, thus if any skin rash or difficulty in breathing appears, discontinue the medication immediately and consult a physician. Hematologic abnormalities such as leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, or anemia may occur infrequently, requiring blood tests for long-term use. Neurological symptoms reported include anxiety, confusion, seizures, especially in patients with diminished kidney function or those receiving high doses. Patients with impaired kidney function may experience serious renal abnormalities such as acute kidney failure or interstitial nephritis and should be monitored carefully. This medication can disturb the balance of intestinal bacteria, leading to fungal infections like candidiasis and may cause a bleeding tendency due to vitamin K deficiency. Drug interactions suggest avoiding concurrent use with probenecid, allopurinol, disulfiram, and caution is warranted as it may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. During pregnancy, especially in the first three months, administration should be avoided; during breastfeeding, caution is advised as side effects may arise in the infant. It is not recommended for children under 12 years or those weighing less than 40 kg. Elderly individuals, having decreased physiological functions, should be used cautiously with adjusted doses and intervals due to a higher risk of adverse effects. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms, renal abnormalities, convulsions, etc., may occur, and immediate cessation of administration and appropriate treatment is required. This medication should be stored in a dry place at temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius, and prolonged or unnecessary use should be minimized to reduce the risk of resistant bacterial strains and side effects, thereby it is vital to use it for the minimum duration as prescribed by a physician.
