Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive effect for partial epilepsy, improvement of fibromyalgia.
This medication is used to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults and as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in epilepsy. It also helps alleviate symptoms of fibromyalgia. Due to these effects, it is widely used in pain management and the treatment of neurological disorders.
This medication is administered orally in total daily doses divided into two doses regardless of meals. 1. Neuropathic Pain 1) Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose is 150 mg per day, and after 3 to 7 days, it may be increased up to 300 mg per day, and if necessary, may be titrated to a maximum of 600 mg per day at 7-day intervals. 2) Central Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose is
Administration is not recommended for children under 12 years old and adolescents aged 12 to 17 years due to insufficient safety and efficacy data.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, so if there are changes in mood or behavior during treatment, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or with hereditary lactose intolerance should not use it. Patients with diabetes may experience effects on blood sugar control due to weight gain, so blood sugar medication adjustments may be necessary. If symptoms of angioedema (such as swelling of the face or around the mouth) occur, stop taking the medication immediately. Elderly patients should be cautious due to the risk of falls or injuries from dizziness or drowsiness until they become accustomed to this medication. Transient blurred vision or vision changes may occur, but symptoms can improve once the medication is discontinued. Suddenly stopping this medication may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, nausea, and anxiety, so discontinuation should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Patients with a history of substance abuse may have an increased risk of misuse, so special caution is needed when taking this medication. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dosage adjustments, and there have been cases where kidney function improved after discontinuation. Patients with heart diseases or congestive heart failure should use this medication cautiously. Taking with opioid analgesics may increase central nervous system depressant effects, so caution is advised. Patients with weakened respiratory function or elderly patients may be at risk for severe respiratory depression, so dosage adjustments may be necessary. It is not recommended to take this medication during early pregnancy due to the risk of fetal malformations. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception. Nursing mothers should avoid taking this medication as it is passed into breast milk. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. In case of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, depression, or seizures may develop, and treatment such as hemodialysis may be necessary. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers. Rarely, serious skin reactions (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome) may occur, so if any skin abnormalities develop, discontinue use immediately and inform a healthcare professional.
