View approved original text

This medication is used to manage essential hypertension. It also helps to improve heart failure symptoms in patients with intolerance to ACE inhibitors. Moreover, it has been shown to reduce the risk of death in patients with left ventricular dysfunction or reduced contractile function following a myocardial infarction. Thus, this drug is used to protect cardiovascular health and increase patient survival rates.

How to take

Adult dose

1. Essential Hypertension Regardless of gender or race, an oral dose of 80 mg of valsartan once daily is recommended. For patients with poorly controlled blood pressure, the dose may be increased to 160 mg daily or combined with a diuretic. If necessary, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 320 mg daily. For elderly patients (75 years and older), treatment should begin with 40 mg once daily. For patients with renal impairment and creatinine clearance between 10 and 20 mL/min.

Precautions

This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be stopped immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, potentially pregnant, or breastfeeding should not take this medication. It should not be administered to patients with severe liver disease, cirrhosis, biliary obstruction, or severely impaired kidney function. Patients with a history of angioedema or those who have developed angioedema while receiving ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor antagonists should not use this drug. Caution should be exercised when administering to elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, or patients with liver impairment, as dose adjustments may be necessary. Patients with heart failure, those who have had a myocardial infarction, or patients dependent on renal function require assessment of kidney function and blood pressure monitoring while taking this medication. Side effects such as hypotension, dizziness, fatigue, headache, and cough may occur during use; if symptoms are severe, consult a physician. Caution is advised when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements, as blood potassium levels may become dangerously high. When used with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the blood pressure-lowering effect may be reduced or kidney dysfunction may occur, so consultation with a healthcare professional is recommended. Because this drug lowers blood pressure, there is a risk of sudden drops in blood pressure leading to fainting or dizziness upon initial dosing, so special care is needed during the start of treatment. Patients should be cautious of the risk of accidents due to dizziness while driving or operating machinery. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels is necessary while taking this medication, and abnormal symptoms should be reported immediately to healthcare providers. Use in children and adolescents is not recommended, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In cases of overdose, serious hypotension or loss of consciousness may occur; emergency medical attention should be sought immediately. Store in a locked location out of reach of children and avoid transferring to other containers.
