Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunct for partial seizures in epilepsy, improvement of fibromyalgia.
This medication is used to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults and is used as an adjunct for partial seizures in patients with epilepsy. It also helps alleviate symptoms of fibromyalgia. It is effective in improving significant neuropathic and musculoskeletal pain and reducing the frequency of partial seizures. This drug is widely used for symptom relief of various neurological disorders.
This drug is to be taken orally, divided into two doses per day regardless of meals. 1. Neuropathic pain 1) Peripheral neuropathic pain: The starting dose is 150 mg daily, and it can be increased to 300 mg daily after 3 to 7 days. If necessary, it can be escalated to a maximum of 600 mg daily at 7-day intervals. 2) Central neuropathic pain: Starting dose is 150 mg daily.
This drug may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so if any abnormal changes in mood or behavior occur during treatment, healthcare providers must be informed immediately. This drug should not be administered to patients with an allergy to any of its components or those having specific genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Diabetic patients should be cautious about blood sugar control as this drug may cause weight gain, and if any allergic reactions such as angioedema occur, use should be stopped immediately. Elderly patients may experience exacerbated dizziness and drowsiness while taking this drug, increasing the risk of falls, and should consult healthcare providers if experiencing visual changes such as blurred vision. Abrupt discontinuation of this drug may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, and anxiety, so it is advisable to taper off gradually after consultation with a healthcare provider. Patients with a history of substance abuse may have an increased risk of misuse of this drug and should be monitored closely during administration. Patients with impaired kidney function may need dose adjustments of this drug. Patients with heart disease should be cautious as cardiovascular abnormalities such as congestive heart failure may occur while taking this drug. The risk of central nervous system depression increases when taken with opioid analgesics, so caution is advised during co-administration. Pregnant women should avoid taking this drug in early pregnancy due to the risk of fetal malformations, and sexually active women should use effective contraception. Breastfeeding women should consult healthcare providers as this drug can be transferred via breast milk and may need to discontinue feeding. This drug can cause dizziness and drowsiness; therefore, driving or operating hazardous machinery should be avoided after ingestion. In case of overdose, symptoms such as mental confusion, drowsiness, and seizures may occur, necessitating immediate emergency treatment. Store this drug out of reach of children in a safe place, and do not transfer it to another container. If severe allergic reactions such as skin rash, fever, or breathing difficulties occur during the use of this drug, use should be stopped immediately, and healthcare providers should be contacted.
Hives, severe swelling (edema), difficulty breathing, cold sweat, angioedema, chest tightness, breathing difficulties, severe allergic reactions, severe rash with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in mucous membranes of mouth/eyes, severe skin adverse reactions, asthma attacks, respiratory abnormalities accompanied by cough and fever, yellowed skin or eyes (jaundice), extreme drowsiness throughout the body, liver dysfunction (jaundice), sudden and severe headaches, thunderclap headaches.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug should be stored in a tightly sealed container to protect it from air and moisture and kept at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help maintain the medication's effectiveness.
