Precautions

This drug is primarily used for the treatment of psychiatric disorders, and there may be an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors while taking it, particularly in children, adolescents, and young adults. Close monitoring for risk of suicide and behavioral changes is required at the beginning of treatment or when changing doses, and family members or caregivers should carefully observe the patient. Before administering to bipolar disorder patients, a screening for the potential of this disorder should be conducted, and this drug is not approved for the treatment of pediatric depression. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which can be fatal, may occur; therefore, if symptoms such as high fever, muscle rigidity, or changes in mental status appear, immediate consultation with medical personnel is required. Long-term use may result in irreversible tardive dyskinesia, so using the minimum effective dose for the shortest period of time is recommended. Elderly patients with dementia may have an increased risk of cerebrovascular accidents such as stroke, so the use of this medication is not recommended in such cases. Since this drug can affect blood sugar control, diabetic patients should regularly monitor their blood sugar, and if symptoms of hyperglycemia appear, should notify medical personnel immediately. There is a risk of venous thromboembolism, so before and during the use of this drug, risk factors for thrombosis should be evaluated and preventive measures taken. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or lactose intolerance should not take it, and those with orthostatic hypotension, seizure history, or cognitive and motor impairments should be administered carefully. This drug may cause drowsiness, sedation, and dizziness, so caution is needed when driving or operating dangerous machinery. Weight gain, gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, constipation), headache, insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness may commonly occur as side effects. Adverse reactions may include extrapyramidal symptoms, tremors, akathisia, and if symptoms are severe, consultation with medical personnel should be sought. Regular health check-ups and monitoring for adverse reactions are necessary during long-term use, and immediate consultation with medical personnel should occur if any concerning symptoms arise.
