This medication is helpful when dietary management and exercise are insufficient for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, and it lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, thereby delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It is also used as an adjunct to diet in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. It is effective in lowering cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization in adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors. It is widely used to improve cardiovascular health due to these efficacies.

Precautions

This medication is contraindicated for certain patients. For example, patients allergic to any component of this medication, those with active liver disease, those with muscle disorders, and those with severe renal dysfunction should not take this medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as women of childbearing age not using appropriate contraception, should also avoid this medication. If administered to women of childbearing age, the potential for pregnancy and risks to the fetus must be considered. Additionally, caution is required in patients vulnerable to muscle disorders, those with hypothyroidism or a family history, alcoholics, and those concomitantly taking specific medications. This medication contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders. Patients with a history of excessive alcohol consumption or liver disease should have their liver function tested before use and regularly monitor liver enzyme levels during treatment. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, or cramps occur, patients should immediately inform healthcare providers and may need blood tests to check for muscle damage. Special caution is needed for the elderly, patients with reduced renal function, and patients taking certain other medications due to the heightened risk of muscle-related side effects. While this medication is not generally known to significantly affect driving ability or machine operation, caution is advised as dizziness may occur. Serious side effects such as abnormal liver function, increased risk of diabetes, and rarely severe skin reactions or interstitial lung disease may occur, necessitating immediate consultation with a physician if unusual symptoms arise. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients should inform healthcare providers of any other medications they are taking, especially when used in combination with specific antiviral agents, antifungals, immunosuppressants, or fibrate drugs, as risks may increase. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should not use this medication, and women who may become pregnant should use appropriate contraceptive methods. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; patients should seek immediate medical attention for symptomatic treatment and evaluation.
