This medication is primarily used as an adjunct therapy when dietary changes and exercise alone are insufficient to control primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, as well as in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. It helps lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, thereby delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It can also be used as an adjunct to dietary therapy in children aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication is also beneficial for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and is expected to reduce risks of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular reintervention in patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Overall, this medication serves as an effective treatment option for managing dyslipidemia and reducing cardiovascular disease risk.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should be avoided in patients who are allergic to this drug, have severe liver dysfunction, have muscle disorders, have severe kidney impairment, are pregnant or breastfeeding, and when taking certain medications. It is important to periodically check liver function tests and muscle status while using this medication, especially in patients with a history of liver disease or who consume alcohol excessively. If symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, promptly inform a physician, and in severe cases, consider stopping the medication. This drug can rarely cause serious muscle problems like muscle damage or rhabdomyolysis. Additionally, this medication may elevate blood sugar levels, so patients at risk for diabetes should strictly manage blood sugar. The drug may interact with other medications, so inform healthcare providers about any other medications being taken, particularly with some antivirals, antifungals, immunosuppressants, and fibrates. Women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraception, and it should not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. There are no specific antidotes for overdose; therefore, treatment should be symptom-based while monitoring liver function and muscle enzyme levels. Finally, this medication can cause dizziness, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery.
