Treatment of hypercholesterolemia and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is mainly used as an adjunct therapy in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia where diet and exercise alone are insufficient. It also assists in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in combination with other therapies, such as LDL separation methods. It lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, effectively slowing the progression of atherosclerosis. It is also used to reduce cholesterol levels in children with familial hypercholesterolemia, and serves as an adjunct treatment for patients with mixed dyslipidemia. It is especially helpful in high-risk patients with elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels and cardiovascular disease risk factors to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and revascularization procedures. Thus, it is effectively used in the treatment of various dyslipidemias and cardiovascular risk patients.
This medication can be taken at any time of day, regardless of meals. The initial dosage is 5 mg once daily, and the maintenance dosage is adjusted to 10 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should occur at intervals of 4 weeks or longer, with a maximum daily dosage of 20 mg.
The usual dosage range for pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 5 mg to 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted according to the therapeutic goals for each individual patient, typically after 4 weeks or longer.
