Summary

Main use
Treatment of influenza (types A and B) and prevention of influenza
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
1. Influenza A and influenza B virus infections Initiate treatment on the first or second day after the onset of influenza symptoms. This medicine may be taken with or without food; in some patients, taking it with food may improve tolerability. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: Administer oseltamivir 75 mg orally twice daily for 5 days. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older who have difficulty swallowing capsules should use this medicine as powder for suspension. Patients with renal impairment: No dosage adjustment is required for patients with creatinine clearance ≥ 60 mL/min. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg twice daily for 5 days is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily for 5 days is recommended. Patients receiving periodic hemodialysis should receive a 30 mg dose of this medicine after each dialysis session to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations; treatment should not exceed 5 days. If influenza symptoms develop during the 48 hours between dialysis sessions, the dose may also be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, a single 30 mg dose of this medicine after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dosage adjustment is required for treatment in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9). 2. Prevention of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: For close contacts of an infected person, administer oseltamivir 75 mg orally once daily for 10 days. Start administration within 2 days of contact with the infected person. The recommended dose for prevention during influenza outbreaks is 75 mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The preventive effect continues while this medicine is being taken. Patients with renal impairment: No dosage adjustment is required for patients with creatinine clearance ≥ 60 mL/min. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg every other day is recommended. Patients receiving periodic hemodialysis should receive a 30 mg dose of this medicine after every 2 dialysis sessions to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations. The initial dose may also be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, administration of 30 mg of this medicine after dialysis once weekly is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance less than 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dosage adjustment is required for prevention in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9).

  • Influenza B virus infection
View approved original text

This medication is used to treat influenza A and B virus infections in children aged 2 weeks and older, as well as in adults. Treatment should be started within 48 hours of the onset of infection for it to be effective, and it can also be applied in newborns. In children over 1 year of age, it can also be used for the prevention of influenza, but basic prevention should be through vaccinations, so it should only be used as an adjunct when vaccination is ineffective or has not been received. This drug does not replace vaccination and is effectively used for the treatment and prevention of influenza infections.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat or prevent influenza viruses and cannot replace the influenza vaccine. This drug is effective only for influenza A and B, and safety and efficacy have not been established for other infections. Rarely, neurological and psychiatric adverse reactions such as convulsions or abnormal behavior may occur, particularly in children and adolescents, so patients in this age group should be closely monitored for abnormal behavior. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or allergic to its components should not take it. Patients with impaired renal function or dialysis patients need dosage adjustments, and it is not recommended for patients with end-stage renal failure. Common side effects that may occur during treatment include nausea, vomiting, and headache, which are mostly temporary. Rarely, serious side effects such as skin rashes, liver function abnormalities, neuropsychiatric symptoms, or acute renal failure may occur, and if these symptoms appear, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should consult a doctor before taking this medication and should only use it when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. Safety and efficacy in children, particularly infants under 1 year old, have not been adequately studied, thus caution is needed in these cases. Elderly individuals may experience reduced bodily functions and multiple underlying diseases, thus they should be carefully monitored during administration. When taking the medication, it is essential to follow the prescribed dosage and administration guidelines, and if a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but skip it if it's within 2 hours of the next scheduled dose. While interactions with other medications are generally few, caution is necessary when used in conjunction with drugs that may affect renal excretion. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container. If adverse reactions or suspected symptoms occur during treatment, immediately inform healthcare providers and take appropriate action.
