Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (intolerance to ACE inhibitors), reduction of mortality risk post-myocardial infarction
This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension. It is also effective in some heart failure patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors, especially those with NYHA classes II to IV. It is used to reduce the risk of mortality in patients with left ventricular dysfunction after a myocardial infarction. In summary, it is used for hypertension, certain heart failure, and reducing the risk of death post-myocardial infarction.
1. Essential Hypertension Take with water during meals or between meals. It is recommended to take 80 mg orally once daily as Valsartan. If blood pressure is not well controlled, the dose may be increased to 160 mg once daily or combined with a diuretic. The maximum dosage can be increased to 320 mg daily. This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and should never be taken during pregnancy. It should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Individuals allergic to this medication or any of its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and patients with severe liver or kidney diseases should not use it. Additionally, patients genetically unable to digest lactose should avoid this medication. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, hepatic impairment, and patients with valvular heart disease or cardiovascular diseases should use it with caution. Heart failure patients or those who have had a myocardial infarction must closely monitor renal function, and if blood pressure drops too low, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. This medication lowers blood pressure, and thus, when first taken, can cause dizziness or fainting due to sudden blood pressure drops, so care should be taken. Patients undergoing dialysis or on sodium restriction, as well as those taking diuretics, may experience hypotension risks and should increase the dose gradually while monitoring their condition. During treatment with this medication, potassium levels may rise, so extra caution is needed when taking it with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements. Co-administration with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce blood pressure-lowering effects or worsen kidney function, so kidney function should be monitored regularly. If taken with lithium preparations, there may be an increase in serum lithium levels leading to toxicity, so monitoring is also necessary in this case. This medication has not been established for the safety and efficacy in children and adolescents and should not be used in these populations. In cases of overdose, there is a risk of severe hypotension and decreased consciousness, so immediate emergency treatment is required, and dialysis is ineffective.
