Relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis (seasonal, perennial) and chronic urticaria
This medication relieves symptoms of allergic conditions such as seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis. It also reduces symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria, improving skin discomfort. It is effective for patients with dermatitis and eczema accompanied by itching, and may help alleviate symptoms when used together with hydrocortisone topical agents. This medication is suitable for adults and children aged 6 years and older. Overall, it is used to improve the uncomfortable symptoms of these allergic and skin conditions.
Adults and children aged 6 years and older should take 5 mg (10 mL as a liquid) once daily, irrespective of meals. In cases of renal impairment, the dose should be adjusted according to kidney function (creatinine clearance (CLCR)). - Mild (50 ≤ CLCR < 80): 5 mg once daily - Moderate (30 ≤ CLCR < 50): 5 mg twice daily - Severe (10
Children aged 2 years and older but under 6 years should take 1.25 mg (2.5 mL as a liquid) once, twice daily. Children aged 1 year and over but under 2 years should take 1.25 mg (2.5 mL as a liquid) once daily.
This medication should not be used by patients who have had allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to certain components. Patients with end-stage renal disease or who are undergoing dialysis should not take this medication. It should not be administered to infants under 1 year of age, and children under 6 years should receive it in liquid form instead of tablets. The liquid formulation contains an ingredient called maltitol, so patients with congenital fructose intolerance should avoid it. Patients with impaired kidney or liver function, as well as the elderly, should use this medication with caution due to potential increased concentrations in the body. This medication can cause drowsiness, headache, and dizziness; therefore, care should be taken when driving or operating machinery. Gastrointestinal side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea may occur. Rarely, cardiac arrhythmias or blood-related issues, skin rashes, and eye abnormalities may appear. Taking this medication in conjunction with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants can increase drowsiness or decrease concentration, so it should be avoided. This medication may exacerbate urination difficulties in patients with urinary retention issues. Patients with epilepsy or those at risk of seizures should use this medication cautiously as symptoms may worsen after taking it. The liquid formulation contains preservatives and sweeteners, which may trigger allergic reactions or health issues; therefore, those sensitive to these components should exercise caution. Pregnant or nursing women should consider the safety of this medication for the fetus or newborn and consult healthcare professionals before taking it. For children under 12 years, dosing and administration may differ from adults; therefore, medical guidance should be followed, and it should not be used in infants under 1 year. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, leading to increased concentration of this medication, so treatment should start at a lower dose and be adjusted if any adverse reactions occur. If planning to undergo allergy testing, it is advisable to discontinue this medication 3-5 days prior to testing. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness or anxiety may occur, and since there is no specific antidote, treatment should be symptomatic. This medication is not well removed by dialysis, so prompt medical management is required in cases of overdose.
