Relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria
This medication helps relieve uncomfortable symptoms caused by seasonal or persistent perennial allergic rhinitis. It also reduces skin rashes and itching due to chronic idiopathic urticaria. Additionally, it can be used in conjunction with topical hydrocortisone for treating dermatitis or eczema with itching in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Overall, it is used to improve these allergy and skin-related symptoms.
Adults and children aged 6 years and older: 5 mg (10 mL as a liquid) of levocetirizine hydrochloride taken orally once daily, regardless of meals. Adults with renal impairment should adjust the dose based on kidney function (creatinine clearance (CLCR)). - Mild (50 ≤ CLCR < 80): 5 mg once daily. - Moderate (30 ≤ CLCR < 50): 5 mg every other day. - Severe (10 ≤
Children aged 2 years and older but under 6 years: 1.25 mg (2.5 mL as a liquid), taken orally twice a day. Children aged 1 year and older but under 2 years: 1.25 mg (2.5 mL as a liquid), taken orally once a day.
This medication should not be used by patients who have allergies to specific ingredients or have experienced hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine or piperazine derivatives in the past. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or those undergoing hemodialysis should also avoid taking this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. It should not be given to infants under 1 year old, and children under 6 years old should only receive it in liquid form, not in tablet form. The liquid formulation contains maltitol, and patients with hereditary fructose intolerance should not use it. Patients with reduced kidney or liver function, as well as elderly individuals, should be cautious when using this medication since it may increase blood levels of the drug. This medication may cause various neurological symptoms such as drowsiness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, so caution should be taken when driving or operating machinery that requires concentration. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may also occur, so consult with a healthcare professional if any unusual symptoms arise. Taking this medication with alcohol or central nervous system depressants may significantly enhance drowsiness or decreased concentration, hence it should be avoided. Due to the risk of urinary retention, patients with spinal disorders or prostate enlargement should take this medication with caution. The liquid formulation contains preservatives and sweeteners that may cause allergic reactions or impact health, so inform before use if sensitive to these components. It is advisable for pregnant and nursing women to avoid this medication, especially nursing mothers due to the possibility of transmission through breast milk. Children under 1 year old should not take it, and those under 12 years may require dosage adjustments under the guidance of a specialist. Elderly patients may retain the drug in the body longer due to reduced kidney function, so they should start with a lower dose and monitor their condition accordingly. When undergoing certain clinical tests, such as allergy tests, this medication may affect the results, so it is best to discontinue it before testing. In case of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness, anxiety, and agitation may occur, and since there is no specific antidote, treatment should be symptomatic. This medication is not well removed by hemodialysis, so inform healthcare professionals if an overdose occurs.
