View approved original text

This medication is used for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes who have difficulty controlling blood sugar with diet and exercise alone, particularly in those who are overweight. It can be taken alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemics or insulin, aiding in the effective management of blood sugar levels. This helps improve blood sugar control and contributes to the prevention of diabetes complications.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 500mg of Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release tablet once daily with the evening meal. After one week, measure blood glucose levels to adjust the dose. The dosage can be increased by 500mg weekly, up to a maximum of 2000mg daily, taken with the evening meal. Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and can rarely cause serious lactic acidosis, so caution is needed. When used with other antidiabetic medications, hypoglycemia may occur, so careful observation is necessary. It should not be administered to patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infections, or acute cardiac disease. Before and after examinations using iodinated contrast media, this medication should be discontinued, and resumed only after renal function returns to normal. Do not use in patients with hypersensitivity to this medication, or those with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients undergoing major surgery or with severe infections should temporarily discontinue use and resume after their condition improves. Patients with poor nutritional status or liver dysfunction, as well as those with excessive alcohol consumption, should use this medication with caution. During therapy, renal function should be regularly monitored to avoid drug accumulation, and blood tests are recommended to check for vitamin B12 deficiency. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances and taste disturbances; if symptoms of lactic acidosis such as fatigue, muscle pain, or shortness of breath occur, medical attention should be sought immediately. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so it is best to avoid it. Use during pregnancy should be approached with caution considering potential effects on the fetus, and it is not recommended during breastfeeding. Elderly patients or those with impaired renal function should have their dose adjusted and should be monitored regularly. In case of overdose, blood dialysis may be used to remove the medication, so immediate medical attention should be sought. There may be interactions with other medications, so inform the healthcare provider of any concurrent medications. This medication should be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing, and it is normal for the tablet coating to appear in the stool. Patients and guardians should thoroughly understand the symptoms and precautions that may arise during medication use and ensure safe treatment through regular check-ups.
