Treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections and urinary tract infections
This medicine is an antibiotic that effectively treats various types of bacteria, mainly used for upper respiratory infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and laryngitis. It is also effective for lower respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin and wound infections, gynecological infections, and abdominal infections. These infections can occur due to various bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, and this drug shows excellent therapeutic effects against these strains. Therefore, it can be broadly used to treat infections regardless of the affected area or type.
Adults and children over 12 years old should take 500 to 1000mg (potency) of amoxicillin and clavulanate, orally three times a day.
This drug is a penicillin-class antibiotic and may cause specific allergic reactions, hence it should not be used in patients who have had hypersensitivity to its components or to penicillin-class antibiotics in the past. It should also be avoided in patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or those with viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis as the risk of rash may be increased. This drug contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic lactose metabolism disorders. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease or various allergic reactions, patients with a family history of allergic conditions, patients with severely impaired kidney function, elderly patients, and those with poor overall health, as these patients may have an increased risk of side effects such as bleeding tendencies and should be carefully monitored. During treatment, gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, and in severe cases, severe colitis such as pseudomembranous colitis may develop, so if symptoms are severe, treatment should be immediately discontinued and a doctor consulted. Serious allergic reactions such as skin rash, urticaria, and anaphylactic shock can occur, so if these symptoms appear, drug administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment sought. This medication may affect kidney function, so regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and if any abnormal symptoms arise, administration should be discontinued. With prolonged use, liver function and blood status should be regularly monitored for abnormalities, and care should be taken as infections caused by overgrowth of fungi or specific bacteria may occur. During pregnancy, the risk to the fetus is low, but it should be used cautiously as necessary, and in breastfeeding mothers, since the drug components can be secreted in breast milk, there is a risk of diarrhea or skin rash in the infant, so caution should be observed. In children, especially infants or newborns under 6 months, caution should be exercised as their kidney function may not be fully developed, leading to delayed drug excretion. Elderly patients may be more susceptible to adverse reactions due to decreased physiological function, hence dosage and administration intervals need to be adjusted, and their condition should be closely monitored. Interactions may occur when this medication is taken with other drugs, especially with methotrexate, probenecid, allopurinol, oral contraceptives, some antibiotics, and NSAIDs, so caution is required. In cases of overdose, neurological symptoms or renal failure may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.
