Relief of symptoms of gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, and treatment effect against Helicobacter pylori infection
This medication is used to treat ulcers that occur in the stomach and duodenum, alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, and is also beneficial for long-term maintenance therapy. It is used in conjunction with antibiotics in patients with gastrointestinal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori to enhance therapeutic effects. It is also used in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Thus, it is utilized for the treatment and symptom improvement of various gastrointestinal-related disorders.
Administer Rabeprazole Sodium 10 mg orally once daily for adults. Depending on the symptoms, it may be given as 20 mg once daily. Administer for up to 8 weeks for gastric ulcer and up to 6 weeks for duodenal ulcer. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease, administer 10 mg or 20 mg orally once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. If untreated, an additional 8-week course of 10 mg or 20 mg may be given once daily.
Safety for pediatric use has not been established.
This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to certain components. Caution is especially needed in cases of hypersensitivity to benzimidazoles, penicillins, or macrolide antibiotics. It is also safest for pregnant or nursing women to refrain from taking this medication. Use should be exercised with caution for patients with impaired liver function or the elderly. This drug may cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes and itching; if symptoms occur, immediate discontinuation of use is necessary. Regular blood tests are required as changes in red or white blood cell counts may occur. Liver function tests should also be carried out, and if abnormalities are found, the medication should be discontinued. Caution is advised for patients with cardiovascular diseases as it may affect the heart or blood pressure. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, or nausea may occur, so consultation with a doctor is necessary if symptoms arise. Neurological symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and insomnia may appear, indicating caution while driving or operating machinery. Respiratory symptoms or skin rashes have also been reported, so immediate disclosure to healthcare providers is crucial if abnormal symptoms occur. This medication may interact with other medications; therefore, it is essential to notify healthcare providers of any other medications being taken. Care is particularly needed when used in conjunction with antibiotics, antiviral agents, or anticoagulants. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures, necessitating regular check-ups. Hypomagnesemia may occur, and magnesium levels in the blood should be monitored during long-term use or in conjunction with specific medications. The medication should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing, and stored out of reach of children. During the intake of this medication, the risk of gastrointestinal infection may slightly increase, so if diarrhea persists, consultation with healthcare providers is warranted. It is safe to avoid this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the elderly should use it cautiously considering liver function status. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so appropriate treatment based on symptoms is necessary. Prolonged use of this medication may lead to impaired absorption of vitamin B12, requiring periodic testing. If abnormal reactions occur to the skin or systemically during medication use, immediate discontinuation and a consultation with a specialist are necessary. While this medication does not significantly affect driving ability, caution is needed as drowsiness may occur.
