Summary

Main use
Treatment of herpes zoster virus infection
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Adults: Administer famciclovir 750 mg orally once daily for 7 days. Take it at the same time each day. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. Patients with renal impairment: Since creatinine clearance of this medicine is reduced in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be made with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. Treatment of herpes zoster infection Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59 : 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29 : 250 mg per dose, once daily If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis: It is preferable to administer the medicine every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. Since 4 hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this medicine by approximately 75%, administer the full dose of this medicine immediately after dialysis. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with evident chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no clear recommended dose has been established.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to this drug or its components. Caution is advised when administering this drug to patients with impaired kidney function. Symptoms such as headache or nausea may occur while taking this medication, but they are mostly mild. Rarely, there may be a decrease in platelet count due to blood-related issues, and white blood cell count may also drop. It may affect the central nervous system, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion, particularly more pronounced in elderly patients. Gastrointestinal symptoms may commonly include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Liver function tests may show abnormalities or, rarely, jaundice may occur. Skin rashes or itching are common, and serious skin reactions may occur infrequently; therefore, if any abnormal symptoms arise, consultation with a healthcare professional should be immediate. Acute renal failure has been reported rarely in patients with impaired kidney function, thus dosage adjustments should be considered based on kidney status. This medication does not completely cure genital herpes, so sexual contact should be avoided during symptomatic periods, and safe sex practices should be maintained. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, patients should refrain from driving or operating machinery. Patients with mild liver dysfunction generally do not require dosage adjustments; however, severe hepatic impairment may reduce drug efficacy. This medication usually does not interact significantly with most other drugs, but the concentration may change when used with certain medications, so it is important to inform healthcare professionals about all medications being taken. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the benefits and risks before using this medication, and the same applies to nursing mothers. Children under the age of 18 should not be used as the safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been established. Older adults typically do not require dosage adjustments; however, dosage should be adjusted if kidney function is impaired. In cases of overdose, appropriate treatment should be sought, and the active ingredient's concentration may be reduced through hemodialysis. This medication should be stored in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees Celsius, and kept in a safe location out of reach of children. Additionally, transferring the medication to another container can adversely affect quality, so caution should be exercised.
