Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against various bacteria, used for upper respiratory tract infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis. It is also effective for the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections, including acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. Cefuroxime can be used for genitourinary infections such as pyelonephritis, cystitis, and urethritis. Additionally, it is appropriate for skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, pyoderma, and impetigo, and is used for the treatment of gonorrhea and early Lyme disease. This drug acts reliably against beta-lactamase-resistant strains, improving a wide range of bacterial infections.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics. Patients with a history of allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics, and those with a tendency to show allergic symptoms such as bronchial asthma, rash, or urticaria in themselves or their family should use it with caution. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or those who cannot take medications orally, elderly patients, or patients in poor health should be carefully monitored for vitamin K deficiency symptoms. While using this medication, mild side effects are mostly transient, but serious skin reactions, blood abnormalities, or liver dysfunction may rarely occur, and if any abnormal symptoms appear, medical advice should be sought immediately. During antibiotic treatment, excessive proliferation of Candida or disruption of the balance of beneficial gut bacteria may occur, leading to diarrhea or gastrointestinal disturbances, and serious colitis symptoms, such as pseudomembranous colitis, may arise. If diarrhea persists or abdominal pain worsens, administration should be stopped immediately and medical attention sought. This medication may cause dizziness, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. When used with other medications, it may affect kidney function, so it's crucial to inform healthcare providers of all medications being taken, and taking antacids concurrently may reduce effectiveness; it is advisable to take this medication with meals. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant should only use this medication if absolutely necessary, as its safety has not been fully confirmed. Caution is also needed while breastfeeding. This drug's safety has not been established in infants under three months, and it is preferable to avoid its use in this population. For children, due to its strong bitter taste, it is recommended to administer it in syrup form. Elderly patients may have reduced bodily functions, making side effects more likely, so dosage and intervals should be adjusted while carefully monitoring their condition. This medication may affect some clinical test results, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers that this medication is being taken before tests. Overdosing may lead to serious side effects such as seizures, and drug concentration can be reduced by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration in quality.
