Short-term treatment of insomnia in adults
This medication is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults.
Because this medicine has a rapid onset of action, administer it orally immediately before bedtime. The recommended daily dose for adults is 10mg. Use the lowest effective dose, and do not exceed the recommended dose of 10mg. Elderly or debilitated patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine; the recommended dose is 5mg, and the daily dose must not exceed 10mg. Since hepatic impairment may reduce the metabolism and excretion of this medicine, start at a dose of 5mg with special caution, as in elderly patients. For adults under 65 years of age, the dose may be increased to 10mg if medication adherence is good but the clinical response is inadequate. Since taking this medicine may impair driving or other activities that require full alertness the next day, take it once immediately before bedtime and allow at least 7-8 hours between taking the medicine and waking up. The duration of treatment generally ranges from a few days to 2 weeks, and up to a maximum of 4 weeks. Reduce the dose gradually when clinically appropriate. As with other hypnotics, long-term use is not recommended. The duration of treatment should be as short as possible and should not exceed 4 weeks. Since the risk of abuse and dependence increases with the duration of treatment, do not continue treatment beyond the maximum duration without reassessing the patient's condition.
Do not administer this medicine to children.
This medication may cause complex behaviors (such as sleepwalking or driving) while not fully conscious, especially at the start of treatment or after resuming use. There is a risk of serious injury to oneself or others during such behaviors, so caution is needed. When there are sleep disorders, there may be physical or mental issues, so a proper evaluation is needed before treating insomnia symptoms. If symptoms do not improve after 7-10 days of treatment, further examination may be required as there could be other causes. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, so it is important to start at the minimum effective dose. Abnormal thoughts or behavioral changes may occur when using this medication, and using it with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants may worsen these side effects. Memory impairment or mental symptoms may appear suddenly, so if these symptoms occur, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Discontinuing this medication suddenly may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, anxiety, and restlessness; thus, the dosage should be reduced gradually under medical guidance. After taking this medication, it may cause drowsiness, so risky activities such as driving or operating machinery should be avoided, and it should never be taken with alcohol as it increases the risk. Severe respiratory depression or coma may occur if used with opioid analgesics, so it must be used strictly under a doctor's supervision, and co-administration should be avoided if possible. Allergic reactions such as swelling of the tongue or throat and difficulty breathing may occur, so if these symptoms appear, stop taking the medication and seek emergency treatment. Patients with severely impaired liver function should not use this medication; those with mild liver function impairment should reduce the dose and be monitored closely. This medication is not to be given to individuals under the age of 18 or those with certain conditions. Elderly or frail patients are at higher risk for side effects and should be particularly cautious; if necessary, use the minimum dosage and observe their condition closely. Using this medication may result in adverse reactions such as drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, hallucinations, depression, etc.; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant are advised to avoid using this medication, and it should also not be used during breastfeeding. This medication may enhance effects or increase side effects when combined with other central nervous system depressants, antidepressants, or antipsychotics, so it is imperative to consult a doctor before co-administration. During treatment, avoid alcohol, and it is advisable to ensure sufficient sleep for at least 7-8 hours after taking the medication for safety. Overdosing on this medication poses risks of severe drowsiness, coma, and respiratory depression, so the prescribed dose must be strictly followed. If overdose occurs, seek medical attention immediately. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
