Treatment of herpes zoster virus infection
Herpes zoster virus infection is a disease that primarily causes pain and rashes on the skin along the nerves. This condition can reactivate and occur when immunity weakens. Appropriate antiviral agents are used for the treatment of herpes zoster, helping to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications. Additionally, treatments supporting pain management and skin recovery may be used in conjunction. These treatments are effectively used for herpes zoster virus infections.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer 750 mg of famciclovir orally once daily for 7 days. Take it at the same time each day. It is advisable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Patients with renal impairment: Because the creatinine clearance of this medicine is reduced in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be performed with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose twice daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29: 250 mg per dose once daily 2) If only the serum creatinine level is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formulas. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 3) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis: In patients on hemodialysis, administration every 48 hours is advisable, taking the dialysis interval into account. Four hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this medicine by approximately 75%; therefore, administer the full dose of this medicine immediately after dialysis. 3. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no clear recommended dose has been established.
This medication should not be used by patients who have had an allergic reaction or hypersensitivity to this medication, its ingredients, or the active ingredient, penciclovir. Patients with impaired kidney function should take special care when using this medication, and dosage adjustments may be necessary as needed. Headaches or nausea have been reported in clinical trials, but most cases were mild to moderate, and these symptoms occurred with similar frequency in patients who did not take the medication. There is a rare possibility of platelet count reduction due to blood-related issues, with a risk of decreased white blood cell and neutrophil counts. Central nervous system effects may occur, leading to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, and rarely, hallucinations, particularly in the elderly. Rapid heart rate may occur rarely. Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are common. Abnormal liver function tests or rare signs of jaundice may occur, so careful monitoring of liver health is necessary. Skin rashes or itching are common, and urticaria or angioedema around the face and eyes may occur rarely. Serious side effects such as severe skin reactions or leukopenic vasculitis have been reported; if any skin abnormalities occur, consult a doctor immediately. Acute renal failure has been reported rarely in patients with poor kidney function, so appropriate dosage adjustments should be made based on kidney status. This medication does not cure genital herpes, and during treatment, patients are advised to avoid sexual contact and maintain safe sexual practices if symptoms occur. There is no evidence that it affects driving or machinery operation; however, caution is advised if dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion are experienced while taking this medication. Patients with mild to moderate liver function impairment do not require special dosage adjustments if kidney function is normal. This medication generally has low interactions with other drugs, but the blood concentration may change when taken with specific medications, so consult healthcare professionals. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been fully established, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use it when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Lactating women should also exercise caution when using this medication, taking it only when the benefits exceed the risks. It is not advisable to use this medication in children under the age of 18, as safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently confirmed. In elderly patients, generally no dosage adjustments are needed, but adjustments should be made if kidney function is compromised. In case of overdose, appropriate supportive therapy and symptomatic relief should be provided, and blood dialysis may be performed if needed to reduce drug concentration. This medication should be stored in a dry place below 30 degrees Celsius and kept out of reach of children. Transferring to another container may degrade quality, so it is advisable to maintain the original packaging.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication may be sensitive to air and moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly sealed container. Additionally, it should be kept in a dry place below 30 degrees Celsius to maintain its effectiveness.
