Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medication is used as a short-term adjunctive therapy for obese patients with a baseline body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or for patients with exogenous obesity with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia and a BMI of 27 or more. It is used in addition to basic weight loss therapy such as exercise, behavior modification, and calorie restriction, and should be used alone without combining with other appetite suppressants. BMI is calculated by dividing the patient's weight (kg) by the square of height (m), which determines appropriate treatment candidates. This medication provides effective support for individuals struggling with weight management, helping them maintain a healthy weight and improve associated risk factors.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily before breakfast or 1 to 2 hours after breakfast. Use the minimum effective dose, adjusting it individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients, and in some cases, 18.75 mg twice daily may be preferable. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of improper use of this medicine, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants. It should only be used alone and for a short period. When taking this medication, be cautious of the early symptoms of a rare but serious condition called primary pulmonary hypertension. If symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or leg swelling occur, inform your doctor immediately. Due to the risk of cardiac valvular disease, care should be taken when using it for long periods or exceeding the recommended dose. Patients with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, anxiety disorders, or a history of drug abuse should not take this medication. Additionally, those who have allergic reactions to this medication or are sensitive to sympathomimetic drugs should avoid it. This medication is not to be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, children under 16 years of age, or patients with specific hereditary metabolic disorders. Diabetes patients should adjust their insulin dosage when taking this medication, and patients with mild hypertension should also use it cautiously. In case of overdose, severe symptoms like anxiety, coma, convulsions, abnormal blood pressure, and nausea may occur, necessitating immediate emergency treatment. This medication affects the central nervous system and may cause side effects such as insomnia, anxiety, and headaches, so caution is required when operating machinery or driving. Taking it with alcohol may exacerbate side effects, so it is advisable to avoid this combination. Women who are pregnant or nursing should consult with their doctor before taking this medication, as it may be harmful to the fetus or infant. This medication has the potential for addiction and dependency, so it is important to strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage and duration, as prolonged use may result in psychological changes. Store in a safe place out of reach of children.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
