Treatment of herpes zoster; treatment of genital herpes and suppression of recurrence
This medicine is used to treat infections caused by the herpes zoster virus and genital herpes infections. It also helps alleviate symptoms and prevent the occurrence of recurrent genital herpes. Therefore, this drug is effective for the treatment of viral skin diseases and the prevention of recurrence.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster infection Adults: Administer famciclovir 250 mg orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 250 mg of this drug orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 125 mg of this drug orally twice daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this drug orally twice daily. Discontinue treatment periodically every 6~12 months to observe whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose twice daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29: 250 mg per dose once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 125 mg per dose twice daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29: 125 mg per dose once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose twice daily Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 10~29: 125 mg per dose twice daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following equations. Men: {weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis It is preferable to administer the drug every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. A 4-hour hemodialysis session reduces the plasma concentration of this drug by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this drug immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no clear recommended dose has been established.
This medication should not be used for patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug, its components, or the active ingredient, famciclovir. Patients with renal impairment should be cautious when using this medication and may need dose adjustments as necessary. Some patients may experience headache or nausea, but these symptoms are usually mild to moderate and can also occur in individuals who do not take this medication. Hematological side effects may include a decrease in platelet count, and there is a possibility of reduced white blood cell or neutrophil counts. Neurological side effects may include headache, dizziness, confusion, and drowsiness, with drowsiness being more common in older patients. Gastrointestinal side effects can commonly include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Liver function abnormalities or jaundice symptoms can occur rarely, so it is important to periodically check liver health. Skin reactions such as rashes or itching are common, with rare cases of allergic reactions such as hives or swelling around the face, eyes, or throat. In patients with impaired renal function, acute renal failure has been reported infrequently, so renal status should be monitored closely. This medication does not completely cure genital herpes, so it is important to avoid sexual contact and maintain safe sexual practices if symptoms are present during treatment. If dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion occur while taking this medication, one should refrain from driving or operating machinery. Patients with slightly impaired liver function do not need dose adjustments, but severe liver dysfunction may reduce the effectiveness of this medication. This drug has a low chance of interacting with other medications; however, caution is needed when used with drugs like probenecid, as it may increase blood concentration. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should weigh the benefits and risks carefully when using this medication, and lactating women should consult with a professional during treatment. Children under 18 years of age should not use this medication as its safety and effectiveness have not been established. Generally, elderly patients do not need dose adjustments, but those with diminished renal function may require dose adjustments. In case of overdose, appropriate treatment should be sought, and blood dialysis can be used to reduce drug concentration. Keep this medication stored in a tightly closed container away from air and humidity, and store in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees Celsius.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to avoid exposure to air and humidity. It is also advisable to store it in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees Celsius.
